Hi everyone i am a newbie to these sites, but i want to ask anyone who has had their rectum removed after having a sub total colectomy.I had my surgery done on the 14 th august this year and ended up spending 16 days in hospital !!!.Due to an infection in pelvis and later found out a loop of small bowel is also lying in the pelvis.Of course the surgeon was concerned and desperate to go back in and have a look !!!. i refused because one surgery was enough for me. Then a week later i started to pass mucus and blood and no one listened to me when i said i have proctitus !!!.So i got a ct scan barium done (not a good experience at all ). And guess what !!!. proctitus !!!.So 10 wks later still got proctitus and waiting on the removal of this bad beast.I decided the reversal was too much hassle and happy to keep my stoma. So can anyone tell me how long they were in hospital after the op. and any complications after op. My surgeon said some people get fluid in their belly and have to keep coming back for drainage of this fluid ? has anyone had this problem ?.

I am having my rectum out and sewn shut on Wednesday.
Seems it wont be a difficult surgery at all. And I am scheduled to only be in the hospital for 3 days :)
If you have more specific questions I should be able to answer them after next week :) :)

It can take awhile for the rectum to heal shut after the surgery and length of time varies by patient but it will heal and you will be pleased with the end result. Good luck.

I had my total protocolectomy July , 2014. What was to be a 4-5 hour operation with a 4-5 hospital stay turned into a 10-1/2 hour operation due to surgical complications with a 12-day hospital stay. Rehab took weeks and weeks.
With the power of prayer, strong support from family, friends , hospital and rehab personnel, I, as an active senior, am not allowing my Ostomy to control my life. I am here to live life to the fullest and appreciative of every day....feeling so much better especially not dealing with Chrons ..
Good luck and stay positive.
