I swim five days a week-- and I do side stroke a bit (good for the lower back). Definitely agree on sure seals, and you need to have your pouching system reliable.
I would check w/the surgeon on when it's OK to start and then start slow. At the beginning, I had nausea after swimming because my ab muscles were spasming a bit and choking on my stoma. That didn't last long....
At first I was nervous about being in the locker room w/a bag.... more that someone would object to me being in the pool than anything else. Where I swim there are stalls where you can shower and change, and I put my underwear on in there.... since I've gotten to know some of the other women there, I have told them about my surgery, although not positive they've connected all the dots (I think others are also modest in various ways for various reasons).
