I'm going on a 7 day cruise to Alaska and will be going on some side trips at each port and may not have easy access to a bathroom. I have an ileostomy and empty my pouch at least every 2 hours at the very minimum, and often sooner than that. I'm interested in suggestions on how to navigate the need to empty my pouch within the schedule and environment of the activity. Has anyone taken an antidiarrheal medication in a similar situation? If so do I need to be concerned about
dehydration since I will be taking it once a day, a couple of days in a row?

I would just take with ziplock bags and empty into them...

I have taken two cruise trips to Alaska first the inside passage, then Denali Park and Glacier Bay. Also several hours on the train from Fairbanks to Seward Alaska. Both are beautiful and you should have no difficulty due to the ostomy. There are always washrooms nearby both on the ship, train and ashore in restaurants etc.
Of course you want to take emergency supplies with you and I always take a back pack ashore with at least two changes for " peace of mind "
but have never had to use it. I empty every two to three hours as well.
Have a great time, take lots of photos they are great to look back on years later.

Pop a couple immodium when you want to slow things down. They will not harm you. Some people have constant high output and docs put them on immodium regularly. I have used them quite frequently when I want to slow things down, and they work well for me. It is a mostly harmless med that can be used frequently by people with an ileostomy.
Do still make the effort to stay hydrated, but you won't die if you don't drink water every 10 minutes, like some people try to scare you into doing. If you have a chance to try some Immodium for a couple days while you are still home, you can see how/if is works for you. Just use common sense and Immodium and you will be fine. :)

There are black ziplock bags that would probably be more comfortable for Caren's suggestion... in some ways it's easier to have an ostomy than original plumbing. Immodium is a good suggestion too.
I have disagree w/k-del on the hydration, as that's different for different people, and it also depends on the weather and what you're eating. If I eat high fiber food in hot weather, then I can easily get a food blockage if I don't hydrate enough. Glad that's not an issue for you k-del, but not the right advice for everyone ...

Blueglass, I definitely try to stay hydrated, as I know it's very important. I started off that paragraph by advising the OP to do just that. ;)

I recently went on a cruise and ended up skipping all of the excursions because I was so worried that I would need a bathroom and there would be none available. My biggest fear was that different water or food would cause diarrhea and my bag would not be able to hold out. That did happen in my cabin on the first day. I wish I would have thought to try immodium though. I feel like I missed out on a lot. I hope you can find ways to handle it and have a good time. There are helpful suggestions here, so please let us know how it goes. Good luck.

Hi , I'm going on my first holiday for 4 years this year as I seem to be sorted on for the meantime and was thinking of the same problems.
Imodium , change of appliance and a disposable urinal bag is what I'll be taking on trips just incase , I've used the portable pit stop's brief relief bag in the past and seems to do the job for my ileo output.
I've decided to not let this ailment ruin my family holiday , enjoy your holiday.
