Ncot, did I read it correctly that you are getting a reversal next month?

I am so glad for you if this is the case. I know you hate your stoma and wanted a reversal.

I'll be praying for you and I hope things go great for you.

I was gonna make a topic about it, but I guess you beat me to it :p

I saw my surgeon last week. There wasn't that much to discuss really, as I had seen her a couple of months earlier. This was mostly to confirm the date, really: 17th July. And in case anyone is wondering about the type of surgery, it will be done as an ileorectal anastomosis, which is a connection of the ileum to the rectum. No j-pouch involved, as I still have my own rectum. The Crohn's largely spared my rectum and I hope continues to spare it.

I'm just as nervous about it as I was the first operation to be honest. I'm on my own this time - literally, in that I am living on my own and am not even in contact with my family right now. (Maybe one day in the future, but for now I just can't deal with them....) I'm not looking forward to the first few weeks after the operation, but I'm hoping the end result will be worth the short-term suffering... :-/

I will be making a topic asking for advice soon, but it won't be today 'cos I am shattered: desperately need to catch up on sleep. But thanks for thinking about me and thanks for your well wishes!

that is exciting news! Truthfully, from what I've read from you over the yeras, having no conatct with your family is probably for the best right now. You'll be ok post-op, on your own. Better than you expect, I imagine. I received very little help from my Mom post-op- mainly my choice! My husband went back to work, daughter ins chool... just me & the cats! So will yuo have totaly control over your bowels after the surgery? I have no idea what types of muscles may be affected by all the surgery in that area.... I hope the Crohns stays far away from your rectum! So one more month, eh? That's what- 4-6 bag changes??? You got this!

Obviously the surgery isn't exactly the same but I was back to work 4 days after takedown surgery (3 step jpouch) and was walking around hours after, a little painful but manageable. I'm sure you'll do fine on your own as long as you prepare before hand such as prepared food you can just reheat for the first week, zinc cream for the behind, maybe Imodium, etc.

Being that you may be on your own for a bit I'd try to milk the hospital stay a day or two extra until you feel comfortable taking care of your self on your own. I couldn't stand the place and most likely went home a little early as a result.

I think you can also have peace of mind that family is family and if things ever got really bad and you felt you could forgive your family I'm sure they'd help support you in some fashion through your journey.

Eva - Thanks! I should have total control over my bowels, yeah. I did talk about that with the surgeon. She asked me if I was incontinent before surgery. I said no. She said I won't be incontinent after surgery then. I just hope she's right. FAP patients have this operation a lot, and the outcome seems to be good for them.

Virdent - Hey, it's close enough :p I'm impressed you were back to work 4 days later. I intend to try to stay in hospital for as long as possible, unless the ward is unbearable. Can't say I liked it last time at all. Overcrowded, overheated place with a fluorescent light that was migraine-inducing (and I can normally tolerate fluorescent lights pretty well). Not to mention the 3 generations of extended families trooping in and out at all hours of the day. It would really, really make my stay if all the other patients were hermits with no families and friends.

I'm just not capable of forgiving my family yet. If I'd stayed with my parents for much longer, I think I would have ended up spending a night in a police cell or sectioned, it was that bad. They made out like they did everything for me, but my dad was abusive and my mum an apologiser for him. My mum used to make out like she was the best friend I would ever have, but in reality I think the only person whose interests she had at heart were her own. She wouldn't admit that in a million years because then she wouldn't be able to run riot with the martyr act. And she wouldn't be able to go cold and spiteful at the turn of a pin.

Maybe in her weird, emotionally repressed, ***ed up way she loved me, but I don't care. I wanted a different family from the time I was a child. Some people feel like they were born into the wrong body: I feel like I was born into the wrong family.

NCOT, I am really happy for you and wish you all the best with this surgery. I know how unhappy you have been with your stoma.
