Post colectomy/ileostomy question?

A little over a week ago I had colectomy and ileostomy surgery. All went well and I'm slowly recovering but at times I still feel the urge to have a bowel movement. A few times I have sat down and a very very small amount of what I assume to be stool has come out. Is this normal? Has this happened to anyone else? Is there something I could be eating that's causing this? If it is normal, how long does it usually last? I've had problems for nearly 2 years so I'm still psychologically adjusting to all of this which probably doesn't exactly help with the whole "having the urge to go" ordeal either.

Are you having a 3 step procedure? or 2 steps? With 3 step, they leave the rectum after step 1 so you can still have inflammation in there causing you to go to the bathroom to pass blood and mucus. I believe regardless of 2 step or 3, you can pass some stuff out of the butt, but with 2 step, i would think it would be less and it would eventually stop. With 3 step, it can happen indefinitely until you get rid of the rectum.

Hi, I have a permanent ostomy following loss of part of the colon due to diverticulitis. I am 18 months past surgery, and still have the the occasional urge to have a bowel movement. At the beginning, i would produce very small amounts of mucous, but usually nothing now, and the urge is much less pressing and less frequent. My surgeon says this is normal, and I've seen many others on this and other fora who also experience this.

I had 3 surgeries to construct a J-pouch. Your issue happened to me too after my first surgery. No one told me this was a possibility and of course it didn't happen until I got home from the hospital. The first time it happened it scared me and I thought something was wrong. The surgeon and my home health care nurse both assured me this was totally normal but it would have been nice to know that it was a possibility before it happened. Sometimes I would get the "urge" but nothing would happen. The only way to fix that was to sit on the toilet. It did get better with time. Best wishes with your recovery.
