water retention after subtotal colectomy and ileorectal anastomosis

I have always been very slim, I had a subtotal colectomy and ileorectal anastomosis on 1st April this year. 90% of my large bowel was removed and the remaining 10% was attached to my small bowel and my small bowel was attached to my rectum.

Although i have not put on weight i feel heavy and slightly bloated as I eat and drink through the day.

Does any one know if you retain more fluid after this operation, I know that one of the functions of the large bowel  was used to extracr water from your poo before you had a BM.

Do they have you on anything that might contribute to water retention? It's been about two decades, if not longer, since I had my large intestine removed so I don't really remember a lot of what happened to me post-op. I know my face swelled due to the steroids they had me on, but that's about it.

Typically no, we do not retain water. In fact we are prone to dehydration. There could be a number of things going on here, everything from a stricture to high blood pressure. It's best that you get evaluated.

I had similar surgery (then later ileostomy), it doesn't cause water retention. Without a colon to absorb water from stool, it just passes out in bowel movements which are generally more liquid than if you had a working colon, so you'll probably be losing water, not retaining it (same with salt). Or are you constipated?

Bloating is more likely a stomach issue.

Can anyone tell me what to expect after getting a subtotal colectomy with an ileorectal anastomosis? I have one scheduled for four weeks out and am wondering what life will be like after it? Any information would be appreciated.

It's hard to say. Subtotal colectomy is nonspecific and everyone is different. I would be happy to go into a little more detail with some more information but you really should post a new topic with your question. People will likely miss your question in someone else's topic and it gets confusing to have separate topics in the same post.
