output being discharged from two places around stoma

obviously, everyone's output comes directly out the end of their stoma.

however, i have a poorly healed wound, and now i see that gas/output comes out the edge of the stoma in two different places.

i am incredibly worried. i just had the home nurse around and we will make an appointment with the surgeon.

there is no pain apart from soreness of the skin.

does anyone know what this is called? do i have a major problem internally? is there a hole in my intestine somewhere?


surgery was last month.

it is an end ostomy. the output is literally coming from the skin around the edge of the stoma, where the stitches were.

i wish i could draw a picture. it looks like a normal and healthy stoma, except that in the last few days, two small 'bulges' have appeared at 12 o'clock and 9 o'clock around the edge of the stoma. it is from these 'bulges' that faeces and gas appears. it's bizarre.

I have a friend who had a similar experience. 4 weeks post-op with an end ileostomy, she started having output from two small holes where the turtleneck of intestine was sutured to her abdomen.

She had a retrograde barium study (injected barium in through the stoma), and fluoroscope x-ray showed the two small holes. It was corrected with an outpatient surgery where the surgeon secured the anchoring of the stoma. She is doing fine now. No further problems.

I gather, in talking with her, that the two leaky holes were likely caused by the surgeon being less than fully attentive in creating her initial stoma.
