1 piece system vs 2 piece. I have a 2 piece hollister & new to this. Pros and Cons of each?

I think a lot of it is personal preference. After trying samples I could make a 1 piece work fine but much preferred a 2 piece. The reasons I preferred the 2 was first easier to put on and make sure I got a good fit because I could put the wafer on and see all around the stoma. I also liked the freedom of if I wanted a clean bag but not ready for a whole change I could just connect a new bag. Also for me since mine was a loop/temp I had a lot of Dr visits and tests and it was much easier to go for something like an ileoscope with a two piece because the Dr could just remove the bag only and see everything they needed.

My only issue with a two piece is the lip on the wafer portion. When lying down at night a small amount of output would not drain in to the bag.

I had that same issue with the 2 piece hollister, I didn't like how it was recessed. I used the Coloplast Mio with adhesive coupling because there was no lip.

Another factor in favour of the 2-piece, at least for me, is the ability to pull open the bag at the top to release gas. I have a lot of gas, and have not found an effective filter. The hollister two-piece is made of a slightly more flexible plastic than the coloplast; when I tried the coloplast samples, the bag totally detached a couple of times when I tried to crack it open. I also tried the convatec 2-piece, I was anxious to try the moldable wafer, but was never able to attach the bag to the wafer, once the wafer was on my body. If you are wearing pants, you can vent pretty disreetly, if need be.

Lots of options to try -- took me a year to get to my present combination of products, try not to get discouraged!

I like 2 piece for many of the reasons stated. I like to put on a clean pouch but not necessarily a wafer. I like to be able to release air from the top if necessary and I like the ability to see where I am placing the wafer.

I used one piece with my loop here and there. The reason I used the one piece with the loop is because I didn't get good wear time, if I got 48 hours, it was a miracle. I was changing anyway so I would slop on a one piece and change almost daily.

I never liked coloplast 2 piece clip on. The adhesive coupling is ok but I never felt comfortable swapping the pouch with those so I didn't bother with adhesive. I love the mio but it didn't come in convex. I would usually wear hollister 2 piece or convatec 2 piece. Convatec is a huge wafer, I always preferred the hollister wafer. I hate that their bag is so long and doesn't fold up. Convatec pouch folds up nicely but the wafer is HUGE. I would cut it down to a circle sometimes. The snap on convatec isn't good for someone who recently had surgery, you have to push hard to lock it. They make an accordion flange thing but it sticks farther off the body. Actually the convatec standard 2 piece sits really flat.

I seem to be the only one on this board who preferred a 1-piece. I didn't hate 2-pieces by any means, but I never really saw any point to them - none of their 'advantages' were advantageous to me in the slightest. Never had the desire to change a bag without changing the wafer, so swapping out bags wasn't an issue. In fact I preferred changing the whole lot at once; it only took 5 minutes once I got experienced at it and it just felt better/fresher that way.

1-pieces are also a bit slimmer and more flexible. Not that the 2-pieces I tried were bad from that point of view, but 1-pieces are better.

Never once felt the need to release gas from the top, not even once. If the bag ballooned up (which it really only did for the first few months), then invariably it would be a mixture of gas and output and I would go to the bathroom to empty it. It also smelt worse than death, so I didn't really want to have that smell outside of the bathroom anyway.

I seem to be the lone person with NCOT who prefers the 1-piece! To be honest, I've never properly tried the 2-piece, but I agree with NCOT that the advantages listed don't seem like they would be an advantage to me. I can't imagine wanting to only change the bag, I rather take the whole thing off (it really doesn't take me long either). And if my bag fills with gas, there's always output too, so I just empty. (I agree 100% about the smell too!)
I also feel like the 1-pieces are slimmer & neater.
It is all personal preferences though, you'll figure out what works for you!

I'm with nice cup and super! I use 1 piece bags. I'm confident enough that I can put my bag on without seeing my stoma. And I don't bother checking my stoma when my bag is on. I know what its doing, pumping out crap. But simply my biggest reason is, it's 1 piece of equipment as opposed to 2 pieces.

one piece as it cuts down on the possible added failure points (where something could go wrong and contents leak out) and I was always paranoid of odor seeping out from the snap ring on 2 piece- them ore complicated something is them ore areas it can fail- one piece is simple, and only has one area it could leak- between wafer and skin

I've always preferred 2 piece, with my previous colosotmy and my current ileostomy. I'm currently using ConvaTec moldable, the flange is rather large and I learned to make it easier to snap on the bag is to just wet both rings with some water using your finger and it makes it a ton easier. I prefer the two piece, I like to remove the bag and leave on the wafer when I shower. I can wash out the inside of the wafer and my stoma. The wafer holds up to multiple showers.

Ahhh, I am so new to this so...................I've a 1 piece sample bag on right now. Decided to try it, (from hollister) 2 days ago after I changed the 2 piece which I'd only worn at this point. I've got to see now if I notice that issue just out of curiosity. It has vents but they don't let air out. I have an easier time burping my 2 piece if need be. How bout that? @cupcakespinkgal-I have the Mio comings in. A few different samples from them. Interesting about how it is recessed differently than Hollister.

Thankyou for coming by. It will be interesting to try these samples. I have Convatec, Coloplast, Hollister sample coming in. From different bags to mouldable wafers etc. I ordered a lot of free samples to try. xo

@Ann C-Interesting you said Hollister is a bit more flexible. I just wrote below my 2 piece Hollister, it's easy to burp and the 1 piece Hollister I'm trying now, the filter doesn't seem to work either. Thankyou for sharing your colopast and conva tec appliance experiences as well as I have all that you listed coming. xo

@notsosicklygirl. Wow, thanks as well for your descriptions of the different company devices and your experiences. Great since as redundant as it sounds, I've all that coming in. I.............yeah, hate the tail of Hollister. It is long even if I fold a bit up. Interesting some wafers are long, some tails. 6 of 1, half a dozen of the other it seems...... thankyou again. xo

I do have bags that Hollister sent me that are really short, 7 inches compared to the normal 12. I haven't used them yet but don't see them holding very much.
