Anyone have abdominal pain months after ileostomy surgery?

I had abdominal pain for probably up to 5/6 months post-op. I noticed it if I ate a "normal" sized meal (as in a normal portion size, but it was too big for me after months of not eating right). It wasn't necessarily what I ate, it seemed to be the amount I ate. It sounds similar to what you're describing, cramps lasting for an hour or two, I'd often have to sit down for a while until it passed.
For me, I think it was just my insides still recovering from surgery and getting used to my new plumbing. It just seemed to gradually go away, I don't really remember when. Now I eat whatever size portion I want.
Are you leaving a long time between eating? I found that was another thing to cause me discomfort early on. If I didn't eat regularly, it was like my insides filled with air, so then when I did eat I would have bad cramps.
I'd be inclined to say if your stoma is working well then things are probably ok, but if you're worried, definitely contact your team (nurse or surgeon).

Yes I specifically chose the end surgery. A J-Pouch never appealed to me. I know many people have great successes with them, but I didn't want to take the risk of two more surgeries to potentially have it not work - I just had a feeling (rightly or wrongly, I'll never know!) that it wouldn't work for me, and I'd be back where I was. I still have my rectum at the moment though. My surgery was kind of emergency surgery (as in, I went in just for a scope and was admitted instantly, told I was having surgery the next day). So my surgeon left my rectum for a couple of reasons; obviously to give me the option to reverse if I wanted when I recovered, and also because he advised against doing pelvic surgery on me due to my age & gender, and that I had one ovary removed when I was 19 - he didn't want to potentially affect my fertility.
However, I started flaring in my rectum last November and am back on steroid suppositories, which sucks big time. I'm probably looking at more surgery in a very near future to get rid of the rectum - I'm sick of it all!

I agree with what you said about the end ileo being manageable & nicer than UC - another reason why I don't want to get rid of my stoma - if it isn't broke, don't fix it! My life is so minimally impacted by my stoma, I don't want rid of it when the alternative may not be as good. I do still sometimes have moments where I get a bit frustrated by it (as anyone would with anything!), but it's nothing compared to UC and passes very quickly!

Yeah I agree, I've done so much over the last year since getting my stoma, I don't actually think it would stop me from doing anything. Which is another reason I want the rectum gone, since it started flaring I felt myself falling back into how I was with UC, I just felt awful. I'm having a partial response to the steroids, it's keeping many of the symptoms at bay and letting me be more functional. I'm staying on them for a few months to finish my studies (I don't want to stop again for surgery/illness!) and after that I'll come off them & either try maintenance meds or more than likely just get it out!

When mine was bad I actually felt just like I did with a UC flare, the only difference was the pain was localised to my pelvis instead of my whole abdomen, and that I wasn't going to the toilet as much (but still more than you would think possible with only a few inches of rectum there!).
Is your rectum flaring badly? Not long until you can get it removed though, which is good! Should get rid of problems.
