Hi , Im new here, I saw a post about this in the forums but cant find it, I think it was an old post,

I have had rectal bleeding after a total colectomy with ileostomy for a year now,. I saw in here that soem folks think it might ulcerative colitis in the remaining bit of colon, can anyone tell more info please?

Yes even with an ostomy if you have your rectum still the disease or inflammation can return there and cause symptoms.

Probably referring to my post. I didn't have rectal bleeding. My bleeding was coming out my vagina. I shouldn't say "bleeding", more like spotting. I was checked out thoroughly by my gyn, had PAP tests, transvaginal ultrasounds....nada. I do think I have a recto vaginal fistula under that rectal cuff, but be darned if my new colorectal surgeon is able to find it. I had two biopsies in the anus and vagina...all negative.

I would suggest you have biopsies done in the anus. It is possible the disease is back, but you want to make sure it isn't anything more serious. Any other symptoms? My new colorectal surgeon does not suggest further surgery. I am 69 yrs old (70 this August). He said it would be too much of an operation for me. I think the disease has cleared up after I finished up a 2 week stint of Cipro. I no longer have any pressure. I still have some discharge coming from the vagina. Right now I am more concerned about a chest contusion I suffered about ten days ago following a fall in my home.

I have posted about having rectal bleeding. I have my full rectum remaining, and almost a year after surgery, I started flaring in my rectum. I was initially put on asacolon suppositories, they worked for a few weeks, then started wearing off, which is pretty much how most UC meds worked for me! Even when I upped the dose fo the suppositories, they did nothing. I've been on Prednisolone suppositories since January, and I'm stable enough on them for the moment, but will probably end up getting it removed.
My GI didn't do a scope; he said that if there's inflammation there, rooting around in that small area will only make it worse. He mentioned that you can get diversion colitis in any remaining stump, which can result in some bleeding. But my symptoms didn't suggest that (I was having extreme urgency & frequency, along with all of the extra-intestinal symptoms too). When I responded to meds, it confirmed that it wasn't diversion colitis, it was an ulcerative colitis flare-up.

I think--you are asking >>if you still have Ulcerative Colitis since you have rectal bleeding.
1st--> UC is Ulcerative Colitis... Colon [another name for Large intestine]
Total Colectomy refers to > removing the Entire Colon.
UC only affects the Colon.
you have NO Colon. [I would think that you have no UC]
after my ileostomy -I saw the surgeon yearly (for rectal & stoma scoping) and was told, that she would remove my colon,
--- probably in 3-5 yrs because "it is disconnected" and could possibly cause 'problems' in the future.
for about 4 years -- I passed blood & mucus [onto my underwear]
and I had feelings periodically in the rectum, sometimes very uncomfortable [almost pain] certainly a Very Strong Awareness.
my surgeon's comments: " I hear so-many different, unusual stories.. but since I scope you regularly, I know that you are OK."
I simply: "got used to it".
my rectum & anus were removed 5 yrs after the Colon was removed.
I had waited so Long/after reading "horror stories". -but they were all wrong. removing the rectum/anus was very uneventful... it was easy, painless, fast recovery. Then when I took my 1st shower-washing my rear-end
was like---->washing my armpit.:-) I remember thinking: "i should have had this surgery much sooner".

Hellostan...the colorectal surgeon I am now seeing said "OH yes, it IS a big deal to remove the anus and the rectal cuff." I had a total colectomy with end ileostomy in 2010 and only have about 2cm inside the anus because it was not sewn closed. Now, I have ulcerations in that weeee bitty part. My surgeon retired in 2013. My new surgeon is very reluctant to put me under the knife again. He said he doesn't know what he may bump up against once in there. He would try to remove it from the anus, but if complications arise he may have to go into the incision I already have. I am almost 70 yrs old, otherwise in good health. I sought out a second opinion from a top notch surgeon and he agrees. I have had two anal biopsies and there is no dysplasia or cancer. I was told to have the biopsies every two years or so. At the moment, I believe it is controlled because I have no discomfort like I had last year.
