NEW TIES OPERATION. Alternative to an ostomy?

Holy crap, this is potentially the best thing ever. Really, really hope this succeeds and I can have one at some point.

It sounds scary to me but I'm very against putting anything foreign in my body. I won't even get a dental implant.

But exciting to have another option for those that have trouble with an ostomy.

I wish I was excited about it but I feel the same as you. The ostomy implants
are made from titanium.

If one googles titanium teeth implants, hip implants, there are links to cancers as well as auto-immunes which are typically infectious disease meaning the implant breaks the immune for one to catch infection.

There are current lawsuits for titanium hip implants.

All of which mainstream won't put in the equation for the public when promoting these, implants being profitable business.

Not wishing to rain on anyone's parade, because most would prefer closer to our old "normal" over an ostomy. I certainly would. But adding to this, we already have things that adhere to our skin that can be toxic to our bodies to varying degrees depending on the individual, like glues, plastics, flange attachments and all the rest.

Point being, I always say research what they won't tell you. The research is there. Then at least, whatever decisions one makes with their body, they know the "real" risks beyond the marketing that is sold to mainstream.

Knowing what I have read about toxicities, cancers, auto-immune symptoms, from titanium dental and titanium hip implants, as much as I would want to try the titanium ostomy implant; I would be equally as hesitant to try one knowing what I know.

Metal 'toxicity' are one of those things that sites like Mercola jump all over on; I would take any reports about cancer from those sort of sites with a massive, massive pinch of salt.

I do do my research. Cancer risk isn't increased.

Coupled with cancer from titanium implants, one concern I have stems from knowing approx 85% of our immune health is in our gut, so what effect alone will the titanium implants have on the gut flora?

With the titanium implants attached directly to the gut, it could hinder an otherwise already healthy gut flora environment, that prior, didn't have IBD. But then the IBD condition manifests due to the implant toxicity.

The good gut flora would have no defense against the metal toxicity.

Another complication of the use of implanted titanium is its potential to induce the abnormal proliferation of cells (neoplasia), which can lead to the development of malignant tumors and cancer. Through rare, it is a well-known complication of orthopedic surgery that involves the implantation of metallic hardware.

Furthermore, researchers recently uncovered the first reported case of a sarcoma arising in association with a dental implant.As described in the August 2008 issue of JADA (The Journal of the American Dental Association).

A 38-year-old woman developed bone cancer eleven months after receiving a titanium dental implant. Luckily, she was successfully treated with chemotherapy, but the authors recommended further research into the tumor-causing potential of dental implants in light of their increasing popularity and their ability to last for longer periods of time.

ME: Interestingly they say they "recommend further research", yet a large body of the public is finding that "further recommended research" on many things medically are not done simply because further research would indeed provide the data that casts light on true dangers. And that cuts into profit.

With further research halted much of the time due to this fact, realistically we don't get true numbers that honestly qualify which disease conditions stemming from titanium implants, are "rare" or not.

At least we are intelligent enough and have the resources today to be more discerning and help ourselves by gathering more fact; when "informed consent" is swayed much of the time in favour of industry and profit margins.

As far as litigation goes, following many products, I'll be interested to see what happens 5 years after the titanium ostomy implants hit the market and are in use.

Our gov has issued warning and acknowledged the link with cancer and titanium dioxide on their site, though what they share with the public of course is limited.

That said, anything titanium feels like something I will personally have to walk by.

But as said, at least by research we can all get as informed as realistically possible to make the best decisions we can for ourselves when it comes to our bodies to maintain, or further our quality of life.

Wow, this thing sounds incredible! My guess is that it will be years before it makes it to the US and insurance is willing to pay for it, but by then we should have a lot more data about outcomes and patient experiences. It's a great idea and I love the new possibilities that 3-D printing has brought the world. No bag? No adhesive on my skin 24 hours a day? No skin issues at all? Sign me up! My big question though is where the stool goes since it's not coming out and peristalsis is still occurring. It says the small intestine expands behind the device and on its own creates something that sounds like a J-pouch. Would pouchitis be a possible complication for us Crohn's people? Hmm... many questions, not too many answers out there on the web yet. But I guess we'll see how this plays out.

Wow that is cool you have a surgeon so open to the new procedure. So have you still only had step 1? Are you considering delaying step 2 of jpouch to consider this instead if it was an option in the the year or two?

cupcakespinkgal- My surgeon is pretty brilliant haha. At this present time, I will probably still go ahead with the 2nd step of the j-pouch but I'm happy that other options are available. Also in the worst case scenario that my j pouch fails then hopefully this could still be a viable option.

One thing I notice with the TIES, is that it does stick out a bit, more than a ostomy. this wouldn't be a problem wearing normal clothes but I work in the IT sector where I need to wear business wear.

A well functioning j-pouch still seems a better a option then this new TIES operation but that's just my opinion. I will also listen to what my surgeon has to say.

This discussion is very interesting as to what people are willing to try but still adverse to other options.

It does look like the cap is a significant size and wouldn't be as low profile as an ostomy pouch. Sounds like you and your surgeon have a good relationship. I hope your next surgeries go well!

I'm like NCOT and am not a jpouch fan either. I guess I am risk adverse! When they still thought I had UC my GI was really pushing jpouch. When I met with my surgeon I was very unsure about it so we had a very honest discussion about outcomes. I even knew someone 5 years out from jpouch surgery and she loved hers. I think it may have been my instincts telling me it was Crohns before the Drs so maybe I already knew I would be a bad outcome. At any rate right after that my surgeon did a CT and felt pretty sure I had Crohns not UC so that ended the jpouch discussion for me!

That is great you are at least comfortable enough with the ostomy to take your time. A woman in my ostomy group is 4 months out from step 1 and now can't decide what to do. She has 3 young children and realized things are pretty good with the ostomy, she can do things like take her kids to the zoo herself and not worry about being sick or needing the bathroom. Now she can't decide what to do and is in no hurry. But still when she thinks about having the bag forever she isn't sure about that either. I guess that is the bonus of the 3 step. You can take your time and really evaluate life with an ostomy.

Give it at least a decade to see the effectiveness of the titanium implant and perhaps more importantly the side effects. Bear in mind that steroids were heralded as the miracle cure for a range of diseases during the 1940s and 1950s. Of course, time proved steroids to be much less than a miracle cure.

Interesting. I know there was an Israel based company Stimatix GI developing something called the AOS-C2000 (AOS stands for Artificial Ostomy Sphincter) before being bought by a German company for funding, they did a trial after that but I haven't heard the results yet.

It's also a cap, but it might use some kind of magnetic ring instead of a titanium implant. It uses deployable bags in a replaceable cap that open out like an airbag for waste to be disposed of. It has a sensor to detect pressure from waste buildup, and is controlled by an artificial sphincter to hold back everything until you let it through.
