Somer - you are right about the enteric coated medicine, they actually dissolved slowly in the small intestine. The only people that should not take them are people with shortened small intestines or some people with hypermotility problems. I think what they were talking about was if you have hypermotility (the big D) they wont have the time to time release. Glad to hear you are doing well!
Mary - welcome, welcome, welcome. I was the food obsessed freak after surgery... and I also had some complications but nothing too major. Personally, here is my opinion... would you have classes to take in the summer? Because if not I would wait until the summer to have the surgery. That way you are not worrying about any complications or forcing yourself to do things that you do not have the energy to do. Otherwise if you cannot do that... then I would take the semester off.
about your appointment with the surgeon... word of advice here... dont go in saying "I want surgery" Doctors are trained to purposely not do anything that you want... LOL. JUst go in and explain your problem... what you have done about it... the severity, etc. Let the surgeon bring the idea of surgery up to you... if he doesnt... then bring it up...trust me it will work better. Otherwise you will be labelled as an internet reading freak! You have one more major test that you will have to have prior to surgery called the defacotography which is a study to see your ability to poop if your stool were significantly softer. It is very, very important. Although most of us have not had major complications, you must be prepared that there are some serious complications that can results from this surgery. I know Cathy, Saramarie, and Zoe have all had some complications, ranging from the kinda serious to the very serious. The developement of adhesions and problems down the road with bowel obstructions is another thing that you have to consider. Also, any good surgeon will tell you there is a 2% chance of coming out with an ostomy. I did some research prior to surgery and just made sure that I could live with that if it happened. NOT that I wanted it by any means... but I could LIVE with it if it happened. Does that make sense!
Ack, I teach nursing students for a living... so you can tell that educations just flows out of me!
I have clinical today... long day for me! After today though, 2 weeks and 1 day of the semester left. This weekend I will be doing alot of reading and research, I think only 2 of my finals will be bad, but I will be spending probably more time with the students helping them prepare for finals then I will be spending studying for my own. Just the way it works. Last week I think I had influenza... because I was VERY sick... but I am FINALLY starting to feel better about one week later.
Ok rambling... I will type more later. Mary, if you have any specific questions, just ask! BTW my magic week was 4 I believe. I was in the hospital for 9 days due to an ileus, one more week and 5 days later I started driving... so at about 3 weeks I was functionable, but not great. Actually at 1 1/2 weeks I started cleaning out the bedroom (remember I had the 100 or so items on ebay) and was obsessed with that. That was a great activity because it made me get up.. but I took a million breaks. I would only be up for like 10 minutes at a time, or just a commercial break... yes I was tired... but I pushed through it!
Alright... gotta run... love you guys,
Emma
