Hello there-
Wow... what a nightmare! First, let me say I am sorry for everything you have been through! It is wonderful and I hope you have found it helpful to be on this site. I also ended up with an ileostomy after a colon resection for diverticulitis. There was a slight chance I would need one, but my surgeon said he highly doubted it!
Needless to say, when I woke up I was told that there was a problem and I needed to have one due to the chance of leakage. Let me tell you... attitude is everything! You are stronger than you think!!! I know how you must be feeling now, as there is so much caretaking to having one.
What I most remember during that time was being scared or sores from the adhesive, changing the appliance, leaks, smell (which by the way, there really is none) and something getting stuck in my stoma. It was also hard to figure out what to wear as everything usually rests at your belt line.
I decided right from the get go (and it wasn't easy as I was scared) I was just gonna fake it and not feel sorry for myself. I was back to work 3 weeks later, dressed for work everyday, smile on my face and no one ever knew anything! I manage a dental office and saw 40 parents and children everyday. Of course I had scary times, you will too. That is why this site is great!
Mostly I knew if I panicked, everyone else around me would fall apart too. Please feel free to ask me any questions as to reversal surgery, stoma questions or anything else. Remember... you will get through this, and hopefully be there for someone else someday.
