Hi all! I just discovered this forum and I've read incessantly on this subject of reversal with little relief.
My boyfriend got an emergency colostomy surgery and a bag on the 11th of April 2017. Taking a piece of his sigmoid colon, the rarest part to have perforated diverticulitis. He was very sick and close to death.
Post op, His first surgery went ok with a brief ileus and one night of dry heaving and hiccuping and excessive burping. He ended up revcovering fairly well.. Since then he got very used to the bag and his quality of life before the surgery barely changed afterwards. Life was ok with the bag.
4 months later, this past week he went in for his reversal. It has been quite the rollercoaster. Today is his 10th day in the hospital. He had minor bowel moevemtns a couple days post op, and then got released with the OK from his doctor on day 7 after eating a very small amount and passing a very small amount of gas and stool. BAD IDEA.
That same night, he sat up dry heaving, hiccuping, burping and gagging intensely for hours on end. We called an ambulance and was stuck in the ER. He BEGGED for the ng tube which he's never had before. Horrific sight watching it being put in. It sucked up 2.5 liters of bile that was sitting in his belly. Much relief for him.
The doctors are suggesting an ileus but they don't know for sure. He had a CT scan a couple of days ago indicating no leakage or obstruction. He's had the tube in for a day and a half with still loads of bilecoming through.
We are very confused because of the earlier slight bowel movements indicating his intestines were working for a short period of time. Something must be blocking them or the ileus is not letting up.
Please, any feedback would be so helpful.
We need some relief. Badly.
