Bowel resection with loop Iliostomy

I've been on here before . Bowel resection with loop Iliostomy, reversed in 17 days. Terrible problems with dehydration. I've tried meds, food etc. I've had trouble tolerating meds. Been in hospital for rehydration. One of the problems with Immodium/ loperamide was pounding heart, but now I wonder if it was actually the dehydration causing it? I want to give it another go, as I will end up back in, as I can feel myself slowly going downhill again with the watery output. Anyone had success with this drug?

Ya I think dehydration can cause your heart to go fast, cause when in hospital when I had some tachycradia they kept telling me to drink lots of water, an when I had to go to hospital because of a fast heart beat they gave me fluids an it did help bring it down, so ya getting dehydrated seems to cause heart problems, I find immodium helps me now but the first couple of times I tried it it seemed to cause some cramps but I tried again an the last 6 times or so its been fine it stops my output mostly completely for 6-8 hours an no problems when it wear off, I guess you could try it again but arent you having a reversal soon?

Yes. In 17 days, but I will end up back in before that if I can't get on top of the dehydration, I can tell I'm slowly going downhill with it, so I'm desperate to get it at least manageable in the meantime. I've started on 1/2 an Immodium and seem to be ok. And I've seen a difference yay! Seriously, it was like water before, not good. I will take 1/2 again maybe tonight? And then if that's ok I'll take a whole one tomorrow twice a day. How many do you take? And thanks so much for the reply.

Hay thats good that youv seen a difference smile Im not sure how much you should take but not anymore then the packet says your allowed, I take 2 tablets only when I want to not have to worry about emptying the bag for awhile so i dont take it everyday , your probably right to have started with just a half tablet if thats workin then dont need to increase it but when Iv had bad watery stuff with a tummy bug Iv taken just 1 tab an it didnt do anything so I take 2 now but I mean its unliekly its going to hurt you just dont go over what the packet says an atleast you wont have to worry about it for much longer when you get reveresed back smile

Think originally my surgeon said one in morning and one at night. So I'll do that tomoz if all goes well. He did say there's always some dehydration with an Iliostomy so how do you manage with a permant one if you don't mind me asking?

I dont think I get dehydrated I sip on juice alot in the day drink alot of tea when Im at home but dont drink more then before i had the ileostomy, I was told to be careful about dehydration as Ill get dehydrated quicker but I dont feel more thirsty or anything then before the ileostomy , the small intestine absords alot of water if it didnt we would be dead lol but maybe yours is worse for dehydrating you cause its higher up in your system then mine I dont know why you have this dehydration problem maybe if you had a different type of ileostomy it woudlnt be like that for you

Thank you for sharing that. Yes it must be the placement of the Iliostomy, because dehydration is a real problem for me. Took the Immodium yesterday, made me feel nauseated,I guess cause everything slows down or something, but I'm going to press on with it and see if that improves with use. It certainly helped the output .

I take anywhere from 1 to 8 imodiums per day since 2nd surgery[april 9] as per Dr orders.Rarely do i need 8.3RD surgery soon.Imodium i can tolerate,never an issue.Much more loose stool and dehydration with surgery 2.Im ok and looking forward to last sugery

I'm sure I answered this, so excuse me if it comes up twice. That's a lot of surgeries. My reversal is hopefully the last one for me. May I ask what your surgeries were for?
