Had emergency surgery  3 days ago for an incarcerated hernia.Guess I've had my head in the sand since my ileostomy in Nov. 2012 because I had NO IDEA such a thing could happen.  Now I'm hearing that it isn't unusual for someone with a stoma to eventually get this type of hernia.

Please share your stories with me cause I am still in shock that this even happened.

Desertsun01- I hope your surgery went well and I'm sorry you ended up with a hernia.

I've researched the topic quite a bit lately and there is little research on the topic other than when you have an ostomy, the muscles of the abdominal wall are divided to bring the stoma to skin level. This compromises the abdominal wall and makes individuals with a stoma at risk of hernia, in which part of an internal organ projects through the abdominal wall.

Hernia's are prone to individuals with a weak abdominal core. A hernia can occur from as simple as a cough or sneeze. In other words, many times it cannot be prevented.

Just curious, do you know what you were doing when you first realized you had the hernia?

Since my surgery in Nov2012 I've had 2 long episodes of cold, asthma and allergies. All produced coughing that lasted at least a month. I was worried about that coughing. Then about 3 months ago, I'd get this sharp pain across my stomache that would last a few minutes. I never connected the pain with a hernia and the pain would only last about 5 min.

That sounds awful dealing with all that in addition to your Ileo surgery. I'm glad they did surgery to fix the hernia. Sometimes they just let them go but I'd rather have it taken care of. Hopefully it heals quick for you and you can get back to normal:)

Did you have any bulging or swelling? I have a parastomal hernia so I'm not sure what the difference is with what you have. I'm glad you got it fixed and are on the mend.

I'm sorry to hear about your hernia.  My husband has a parastomal hernia which gives him problems from time to time.  It pops out and can cause output to back-up.  He usually can pop it back it by bringing his knees to his chest and that relieves the pressure, but it's something we always have our eyes on.  Not sure how this compares to your hernia.

as Kcookie mentioned bring your knees up and rock slowly back and forth. Lie on your right side. It sometimes takes a whole day for it to slide back. It will tire you out. Getting mine repaired because it keeps coming back and the Dr. is concerned that it would only take once to become strangulated.

Im bulging some around stoma-is that normal??

Everyone is different. Mine would get the size of a tennis ball and hard as a baseball. As the day would go on it would just get more painful. I googled it and found that the exercise I mentioned worked but this was after a visit to the ER where they were able to slide it back for me. Mine was called incarcerated hernia and nothing passes the area and you end up vomiting. On a normal day I don't have much bulging but if it bothers you often enough it should be repaired. You don't want it to get strangulated. Us Jpouchers have been through enough.

When I cough i dont feel like i can cough as hard anymore since my surgery, It feel bad on my stomach if i try coughing as normal
