Feel like I need to pass wind out of rectum...

Hi guys
Just a question fir those with end ileostomy. Got mine 3 weeks ago and a subtotal colectomy leaving rectal stump. My surgeon said theres about 5 inches of rectum there.
So my question, is it normal to feel the urge to pass wind out of there? I wonder if there is some mucus or anything still being secreted. I dont seem to have any control over my anal sphincter - i cant voluntarily open it or bear down with the muscles you usually use when pooing. But is it possible theres stuff stuck up there? Would it somehow reabsorb? What was everyone elses experience?

It could be 'dangling redundant nerves'. Had my ileostomy 2 years ago (not sure how much anal stump-if any).
Still get those 'weird feelings where you think you need to go/pass wind' but not as much as earlier months. Even then it was sporadic and had to take Tylenol to try and relieve it.
My surgeon explained it as similar to the 'phantom limb' pains associated with amputees, where the severed nerve ends can respond to false messages from the brain. It apparently takes the brain some time to get used to the fact that there is 'no load' at the end of that circuit----to put it in electrical terms.

It's a horrible feeling and the sad part is that when you got that same feeling before, you just went to the bathroom to alleviate it----now, you have no control over it. My surgeon prescribed Lyrica (pregabalin). It works for me even on a low dose (25mg) daily. Good luck!

Wow thats very interesting! Yes its really annoying. I wish I could just fart but theres nothing there....!!!!

I just had my surgery and I needed a drain tube for my rectum. After it was pulled I still pooped blood and puss from it.

When you have the rectum, you will pass stuff, and it can feel like there is pressure in there. Did you have surgery for UC?

Hi yeah for UC.
Im 7 weeks post op and still not passed anything at all out of rectum. Yet most days i still feel a big urge to pass something! Its really annoying!

Oh sorry, I remember your story now that I think about it. I was passing stuff after my first step, usually in the morning after waking. When you have the rectum, you can still suffer from proctitis, which can cause some blood, urgency, tenesmus... the fact that nothing has come out is probably a good sign. If it is uncomfortable you should go to your surgeon and get checked out. You might be able to use a suppository or something.
