question for anyone whos had ileostomy reversal

I was just wondering if anyone knows how soon after having the ileostomy reversal, you can drink alcohol again?

Im 30 in a couple of weeks and want to celebrate with a few drinks. I had the reversal op 6 weeks ago and feel perfectly fine, but forgot to ask if I can drink!

If anyone has the answer for me, could you let me know if you had any bad effects.

Lifebegins- I'm 6 six weeks out and I had a drink. Make sure you're not on any medications that are contraindicated w/alcohol. Metronidazole or antabuse are examples, but there are many more.

Im not on any medications now lucky me. So it looks like I should be alright.
How do you feel at moment?

Hi - does your question mean that I shouldn't be drinking? I had the first op in emergency on Feb 15th and am awaiting reversal at the end of June. Have been celebrating getting rid of the UC by drinking rather a lot lately and now am thinking that I shouldn't. Is it really bad? I gave up for 5 months with the UC and would hate to jeopardise my recovery. Thanks! gillian

Hi gillian

I didnt drink after my first op purely because I felt my body had been through so much with the UC then the major op, I didnt want to cause any more problems with drink. I never asked my doctor due to the decision I made myself, maybe you should ask your doctor if your not sure.

I had the reversal op 8 weeks ago now but still havent had a drink. Im seeing my surgeon on Friday for a check up so I will ask him for advise where I am concerned.

  Please forgive me for being so curious.  My husband had his first ileostomy (he has had 4) at the age of 27, he is now about to turn 53.  He and I both were wondering how this is done, not to mention wondering if he could be a candidate for a reversal?  He has gone for approximately 20 yrs. with no flair ups.

I wish I could answer your questions but seeing as your husband has had 4 ileostomys I dont really have any answers.
Could I ask why your husband has had 4 ileostomys, did they all go wrong somehow?
When you ask 'how was it done' do you mean the reversal operation?
I was told at the time of having my ileostomy I would be having the reversal soon after, I didnt even have to ask.
Maybe because your husband has been well for 20 years the doctors dont feel a reversal operation is needed?

I was told a drink or two is fine, having more that gets you sloshed will be detrimental. Enjoy a beer after a few days after surgery is safe. If your sloshed you could strain something and not realize it which can be scary.
