when do you get your staples out?

APR surgery 2/20/06, discharged from hospital 2/24, appointment with surgeon and Staples Out on 3/2 ... 10 days.

Almost 5 months post op now and still have visable pink spots either side of my incision where staples were.  You might try the ointments for scars, but they didn't seem to make much difference on mine.

At first I was supposed to have a laposcopic colectomy along the bikini line, which was also only suppose to be a 3 1/2 hr surgery.  Ending up a 9 1/2 hr surgery along w/an ileostomy (ostomy bag) I did not learn about until 2 days later.  Because I had emergency surgery for internal bleeding Day 2 with four blood tranfusions resulting in open surgery where I was gutted from the middle of my breast down past the left side of my navel leaving me with 27 staples removed 10 days later.  For my reversal ileostomy done 4 days before Xmas, the 10 staples from reversal surgery were also removed 10 days later.  Like Maddi stated, every one has a different healing process.  It has been 7 mos since my reversal & I still cannot eat everything.  Everything I eat goes right through me even with the Lomotil I am taking 6x's a day.  I read a lot of the ostomy forum replies & it appears the majority of them recover within 6 to 12 weeks and are back to work.  As far as your scars are concerned, think of them as your own personal healing tattoos  removed all the pain you were experiencing prior to the surgeries giving you a whole new outlook on life to look forward to without the pain from before.  Do not be embarrassed by the scars, remember the scars are your healing scars. Wear what you want to wear & wear what makes you feel comfortable and always be yourself.  When I look at my scar from the middle of my breast down passed my navel, it resembles a snake with a snake head and rattle tail.  And I hate snakes too!  The scar from my reversal ileostomy is really ugly with a color of bright red and a shade of purple.  From the beginning I used cocoa butter all the time on my scars. Good Luck and be positive!  In a little time, you will forget the scars are even there.  Angel
