How Long is recovery after ileostomy?

I had colon surgery in April of the is year.  I had to wear an ileostomy for about 6 weeks after surgery.  The ostomy was removed about 8 weeks ago.  I am still having bouts of constipation, followed by quick trips to the bathroom.  Followed by mild pain in the area of the colon where the operation took place.  I am taking Metamucil twice a day and watching what I eat. 

I keep hearing from people I work with that their friend, or relative, etc..  went through the same operation and are having no problems at all after a short recovery time.

Can anyone tell me how long the recovery should take?

Don't be discouraged about the length of your recovery. Remember, everyone's body is different. No two people have the same type of healing process. I had a subtotal colectomy 09/19/05 and reversal surgery on 12/20/05. As of today, I am just starting to feel better. In the beginning I was having 10-15 BMs daily followed by excruitating hemmorhoids. I became lactose intolerant and could not eat anything that I ate before my surgery. I lived on lots of water and baby food. Slowly building up to solid foods. Now, I am no longer lactose intolerant and I can just about eat anything I want too give or take a couple of foods and drinks such as soda. However, I did read on various forums some people are back to work in 4 to 6 weeks and feel TERRIFIC and it was the best thing they have ever done. For me, it took a year from the first surgery and I am still not back to work yet, but I am feeling much better than before, BMs are less frequent and I continue to be patient and positive about the entire experience.
