Air in my bag

 I have had a permanent colostomy for eight months now,and for the past four months my bag has been filling up with air,and I don't know where it is coming from.I do not have that much gas to cause this problem.If any one can help with an answer,I would appreciate it.I have to burp my bag at least every other hour as it blows up to look like it is full.

for me it was all about what i was eating...ate asparagus and 6hrs later my bag would need burping every 30mins for a couple/few hours. i cut out a lot of fat and basically i just watch what i eat..if i start getting a lot of gas i look back 4-6hrs and see what i ate, then eliminate that food from my diet. i'm still trying to figure it out, it's new for me too. foods that give me gas: beets, carrots, white rice, asparagus, fat-heavy cheese. i'm hoping the cauliflower i ate at lunch agrees with me, i'll know around 6pm later today :D

The right diet can always help. But it won't completely eliminat gas in your pouch.  Methane is a natural biproduct of fecal matter. So, even if you don't have flatulence, it will still result from elimination in the pouch.  You'll find that you will become an expert at "burping" your pouch in time.

Thank you for you reply. I basically stay away from all of the foods that do cause gas.The one thing that I do have once a day is one Caffeine Free soda,but I do drink it right from the bottle or can. Could that possibility be part of the problem? I also have breathing problems and I sleep with my mouth open once I go to sleep. I can not just burp my bag in any room as it really puts out and order that reaks,through out the whole house.I have to up stairs to my bedroom and then turn the fan on,spray and air freshner and let it run for about an hour with the door closed.When I am using a public rest room to burp my bag,I am really embaressed the order that my bag puts out.

I too have gas problem. I have used humor to make it as berable as possable.
Most times I go outside on porch to burp the bag. If asked I just say I am going out to do my part to mess up the ozone layer.

Hi Pin coushion,

 I have gone out on the front steps a couple of times,but it was much warmer and the neighborhood was not so busy.There have a lot more people that have moved it.I live in farely new develoment,and there are people coming and going all of the time now,so it is kind of hard to go out front.Maybe when the weather gets a little warmer,I could step out on the back step,but there are also homes that my back yard faces.I am between a rock and a hard place at this time of year.I guess I will just have to keep going up and down the steps to my bathroom that is in the master bedroom to burp my bag and spay the air freshener until warmer weather comes around.I will figure something out,all though I have no idea how or what right now.

  If anyone else has any ideas,please let me know.I am getting desperate.

believe it or not... i throw two peppermint tic tacs in my bag... so when i release the air it gives a powerful smell of peppermint. the mints melt with moisture in the bag and body heat, so i throw two fresh ones in about 4 times a day. put my family to the test the other day.. we all sitting watching a movie (me n my 3 boys).. and well we all know boys dont care where they are.. they up a leg and let her rip... so mom here reached inside and released the air... for the first time since i got this bag.. they didnt freak out at the smell. chalk one up for us moms hehehe.. tic tacs 75 cents...cheaper than air freshner i'd say

Great way to releave the bubble of gas-Have you heard of the "Osto-Ez-Vent", the quick and easy air release? You stick them on your bag, make a tiny hole in the middle of the vent and then snap it closed. Then when your bag fills up with gas or air you can step away from the area you're in , open the snap and that releases the air build-up in the bag.

I used the Osto ez vents for a long time while I was using a one piece pouch. I swear by them. they make burping much easyer and faster. Now that I use 2 piece it is just as easy to burp it at the seal.
I also have some filters that you can attach to the bag (it has peal and stick on it ) after attached you poke though the filter and bag with a needle. They have a charcol filter and they slowly release the air with no smell. I only use them when I know I am going to be in confined space for a long time. Biggest fault with them is they clog easy and I only get a day or 2 max out of them.
There are a few deorderizers on the market but same are like those sprays that only make it smell like someone popped a fruit tree.

i find any carbonated drinks are a no-no for me. doesn't mean i don't drink them, i like beer and drink quite a bit. but any carbonated drinks i drink in the afternoon, so i'm still awake when the gas comes in the evening, since they do give me quite a lot of gas.

Hi All, I was told (before my operation) that there would not any odor.  nono I found out there certainly is yeah .  I learned to accept the fact that I had to "fart" like everyone else.  I just have to not be around any one when I let my air out. 

My op was in "98", so now am very used to all the jokes about it.  At least we get to laugh about the little things while others cry their eyes out.

hi there, i have drastically changed my diet to avoid gas - by avoiding all green veg and fried food and pastry things seems to have improved. just stick to basic meat, fish potato and carrots or something and pasta seems ok for me but i know we;re all different. no drinks with bubbles at all and try introducing foods gradually to see what works for you

Have you tried putting a few drops of peroxide in your bag?  I don't know if it will work for the air, but it is wonderful to control the odor.  I was embarrassed for years at the awful smell from emptying the bag, but I read on this forum last year about using either peroxide or mouth wash in your bag to control odor.  I tried both and like the peroxide best.  It is just regular peroxide that you buy at the drug store where the alcohol and stuff like that is.  It doesn't take a whole lot, try it for the odor and see what you think.  I wish I had known about it a long time ago.

They have bags with vents. if you go to the hollister site they will even send you samples of wafers, bags, pastes, belts, and many other items. I had some samples sent to me from them as well as ordered smaller pouches. I wont be using those until my wound vac is gone since the flange is different for the other pouches. The flanges and pouches I am talking about are listed under new image. They even have bags called lock and roll where there is no clip it is a strong velcro that you roll up a few times. These i got samples of just to see how sturdy the lock and roll is but I will have to wait to try them out since they require the different flange. These also have the gas vent on them. They have little stickers you place over the outside of the vent and when you want to release the gas you remove the sticker and I assume roll or squeeze the gas out. It appears to even have a little charcoal filter in there as well. I also as I said got a smaller bag in the new image line as well I ordered a full box of those and bought 2 boxes of the flanges that go with the new image line. These are beige but what is nice is that it is a cloth covering so in the warm weather I wont have hot plastic on my leg.
