Hi,

I am 19yo from western australia and had an ileostomy on June 5th and got outof hospital last Friday. I am having trouble emptying the bag in the toilet and the stool splashing in the toilet bowl. If anyone has any tips on howto minimise this itwould be great.

Just tear off a couple of sheets of tp and place in the bowl before you empty - it helps to stop the splashing.

When I had my ostomy I would sit on the toilet when I emptied my bag. I dont recall splashing

I think the splashing can be more of a problem depending on the type of commode and water level. I don't have a problem at the office where I work, but I notice it more here at home. Everyone's output is a little different... mine, well, is basically watery except when I eat a lot of stuff that is fibery or raw fruits. I've had several feet of smal intestine removed, along with all of my large and rectum. The output also makes a difference for me too. The tissue in the commode is a good way for me to eliminate any problems.

hey there i have an ostmy too and when i go to the bathroom i put the opening of the bad into the toilet the empty as i sit on the toilet if you have anymore questions please feel free to ask me.

You may want to try flushing the toilet and the exact same time that you empty your bag. This is great because the smell goes down the toliet too and then your room has less odor. Then just flush again after you clean up. I always empty my bag, then flush, then clean my bag, and then flush again!

Also, I have heard that some people sit backwards on the toliet.

I always empty into a 1 quart plastic container when I am home.  Its easier for me to do it this way and then irrigate my pouch into the same container,then pour it into the toilet.  When I am away ,I bend my knees and empty directly into the toilet using the toilet paper as a guard against splashing.

Have you tried Hollister's ADAPT Lubricant and Deodorizer? This helps the stool form into a gel in the bag. It comes out easier. The toliet paper always works well for me too. I also wait until I have the openning of the pouch low into the toilet before draining it.

I'm also going to try the gel packs for when I go back to work. Anyone had any luck with these? Do they work like ADAPT?

I like to shake up the bag. Then pop the top and watch it all explode!!

Seriously folks, i just try and aim the bottom of the bag towards the insides of the toilets. Make it slide into the water. No splash.

I must be the odd one here because I never get a splash. However, my stools are thick like heavy pudding and they are difficult to get out of the bag. I am not sure if this has to do with my diet because I cannot eat fruits yet but I do drink lots of water. My diet is mainly light meat for lunch (chicken and turkey) with a slice of cheese and then I have dinner (more chicken, tacos, steak, wheat-free pasta). Yes, I skip breakfast...sorry, it is a bad habit.
