Colostomy/ Ventral Hernias

I had the following surgeries: 1979 Appendectomy"appendix". 1985-Hemhoidectomy, Hiatal Hernia. 1990-Hemhoidectomy. 1991-Vaginal prolapse, rectocele, entrocele, cystocele, entrocele, hysterectomy.  1992-Bladder neck suspension, rectocele. 1993-Hemhoidectomy. 1994-Colon resection. 1995-Large Ventral Hernia, Rectocele.  2005-Vaginal Prolapse, rectocele. May 2006-colon resection. Aug 2006-Bowel Obstruction. Feb 2007-Colostomy, Ventral Hernia, 9.0 Cyst on ovary attached to colon and tube.

 

Now I'm facing another major operation for a moderate 5.2cm Ventral Hernia, and I'm scared, any of you have any suggestions on what a should do?

I'm not really sure what you're asking as far as what you should do. Is it whether or not to have the surgery to correct the hernia? I've had surgery on three hernias; two inguinal and one femoral. We just found out that I have an incisional (same as ventral) hernia, but I'll just get it fixed when they do my colectomy. Good luck to you.

Hello, Irish_Mom you said that you have a ventral hernia and that you are going to have a colectomy or colostomy do you know that when they do a colostomy and ventral hernia repair they do not use mesh to reinforce the abdominal wall. I just had a colostomy/ventral hernia and that is why I have another hernia again. The doctors feel that if they use mesh and the patient will get a infection. Do you know of any research studies on ventral hernias? What exactly is a colectomy? is it the same as a colostomy?

Hi again,

Is your hernia on the same side as your stoma? That might be the reason for not using mesh. A colectomy is removal of either part or the entire colon.

Hello Irish_mom, my hernia is on my right side of the abdomen directly on my incision, and my colostomy is on my left side.

If they're going to repair your hernia by a suture technique under tension then there is a greater chance of recurrance verses having it repaired with mesh which is done tension-free. The reason these occur in the first place is because of too much tension during closure at the time of your surgery.

Do I recommend tensin free or is that something that the surgeont recomments?

I really don't want to have anymore operations but, I risk the hernia tearing farther, any suggestions?

If he says he's going to repair it with mesh then you're on the right track.

Thank you, Irish_mom I'm going to see a surgeont real soon.  I'm unsure of what hospital I'm going to go too, out of 5 hospital in my area, I've already been to 3 hospitals.
