7 Weeks after surgery for colostomy and diverticilosis

After recovering from surgery in August, I have had no problems until the 7th week and returned to light duty this week.  Mid-week I couldnt eat because of swelling and felt full.  The ostomy nurse told me to use milk of magnesia and I did.  Today all I have done is diarrhea stool 3 times.  Still uncomfortable but better.  Stomach is still rumbling, and I was wondering if this should clear up in a day or two.  I hope to get back to normal stool.  The doc plan on reversal in December and I am not sure what to expect in prepartion for that either if any one can tell me.

That's what MOM does; gives you diarrhea. How long it will last is according to how large of a dose you took. The rumbling is also because of the MOM. You should be back to normal by tomorrow. Good luck with your reversal.

I am 6-weeks post. Can you be more specific with your symptoms? What do you mean by swelling and feeling full? Were you distended in your stomach? Did you check your diet or are you PMS (if you are female)?

Yes Amey, I meant distended. I did take the MOM and it seems to have solved the problem. I had spoken to two different nurses and they were telling me that if that didn't clear it up there might be an obstuction. I seem to be ok now two three days later. I am still curious about what preparations will be like for the reversal. You say you are 6 weeks post. Post colostomy or post reversal?

Thanks for the encouragement.  No I am male, 64 and fairly healthy, except for this new addition I have to wear for a few months.  But I do await the next operation in December, hopefully will correct everything.  I see on here there are so many that have to live like this.  They have my sympathy for sure, but God is always in charge of our lifes, I do know that, for those that walk with Him.

Thanks for your concern, but you don't have to feel sorry for us. These ostomies have given many of us our lives back. :-) I was so sick with Crohn's for 7 years before my ostomy, and now I thank God every day for my excellent health. I'm disease-free and medicine-free and would never go back to the way things were before. Just thought you should know that these little stomas are our life-saving buddies.

I am surely glad to hear that.  I am just thankful that medicine has been able to change lives.  I guess I used the wrong word when I said I felt sorry for folks.  Living life is worth anything and enjoying it to the utmost.  I have to agree, this thing saved my life too, I am sure, even if I only have to use it for a short time.  I hope you didnt take offense.  I Didnt mean it that way at all.  Life is precious.

Did you take MOM with an ostomy? Did you live in the bathroom constantly having to empty? Why did you have this surgery...if you do not mind me asking.

Yes I took MOM at the advise of the ostomy nurse. It wasn't that bad. It took a day or so but it got me going. The reason for the surgery was a ruptured intestines due to diverticilosis. It turned into an emergency midnight operation after I went to the ER at noon that day. they removed about a foot of the sigmoid part of the intestines, which had the diverticilosis. I have been on a good diet with lots of fiber since and seems to be working better.
