10 days out from iliostomy reversal surgery

Hello,

I've been home from the hosptial for two days.  Had very bad diarreah at hospital and now that I'm home, am having an equally difficult time with constipation.  Any suggestions?  I am taking Questran and Megestrose (sp?)  and cannot tell if they are adding to my problem.  I would like to find something to treat the constipation without needing to call my doctor, who probably thinks I'm neurtoic, anyway.  Since I didn't leave the hosptial with this problem, I assume my doctor did not think it would become one.  Has anyone used Mirilax?

Had first surgery back in May as I had a tumor in my colon and all had to be removed.  I am very thankful that I was able to have the reversal surgery, since the iliostomy and I never became fast friends or very comfortable with one another.  Had some complications due to gastric bypass surgery in 2003, and my body's inability to absorb nutrients efficiently.

This is my first introduction to being part of a forum and I welcome your comments, and hope I will know how to respond, etc.

Welcome to Healing Well. I'm glad that you're through surgery and are home, but am sorry to hear that you're having constipation issues.

I wish I knew what to do, but I've never had constipation. I had the opposite problem - chronic diarrhea from Crohn's - but a lot of people here have had or still have constipation and will be able to give you some good advice on that. You might want to read some of the posts under the Total Colectomy Part 16, because they talk a lot about constipation in there.

I would also call your doctor. You just had major surgery, and he needs to know what's going on.

I have been post op since June 20th now. I still have D daily from my reversal. I have yet to try questran but hoping to add that to my mix daily if that will help. The mirilax I used was since prior to my Sx I had Crohn's with constipation and even with laxatives was lucky to have a BM every 3 days or so. I have never heard of mirilax used to treat D but maybe some have. I know the addition of 2 metamucil capsules a day have helped and the addition of an iron pill. I do have to be careful what I eat and tend to have D from many items that I use to be able to tolerate just fine before my surgeries.

i had my ileostomy reversed in april and i had severe constipation from getting dehydrated and the meds i had been on in the hospital. i ended up going to the emergency room and they had me just go to the local pharmacy and get a bottle of mag citrate try half a dose first then repeat in 4 hours if that doesnt help. i hope everything works out for you

We talked about trying different types of juices, foods that the body reacts quickly to..... prune juice, grape juice... peppermint patties. Personally when I feel a partial blockage, I just try to flood my system with fluids. Sometimes, something as easy as a cup of caffinated coffee works for me since I don't drink much caffeine anymore.

Hang in there... I'm sure that you will have more suggestions.

And, Yes, I agree that you need to let your surgeon know what is going on this soon out of surgery.
