Okay exersizing, what can we do[ complex]

Okay, what type of workout would be best for us ostomy carriers? I have a pooch and I would like to know the best ways to obtain the woman figure back! besides my legs, thighs, and hinny bone! How bout some suggestions from all my ostomites? Thanxs, Bluz

I would think you can do just about anything except heavy lifting and even then you could do it if you worked up to it. You may want to get your doctors okay before trying anything though, especially if it's a new ostomy.

Your ostomy shouldn't prevent you from doing anything you want to do from swimming to horse back riding to running, aerobics to weight training.

This will be a good topic ---- I'm sure you will get answers from one end of the spectrum to the other.

Personally, I don't do a lot of exercise, but I don't hide from physical work usually (until I recently tore my rotator cuff doing physical work!!). I won't do any heavy lifting, or any crunches. It just bothers my belly too much. But, I'm not overweight in any manner either.

I enjoy a variety of exercises... walking, biking, aerobics, yoga, swimming, jogging, weights, and sit ups... and have never had any problems. So, go ahead and try your favorites!

Thank you for the replies ladies, please all keep them coming.

   2.  If I were to do a crunch will my wafer pop off?

   3.  I don't do heavy lifting because I had herniated a disc w/ nerve damage, so I won't attempt that.

   4.  If I were to go swimming, how do I keep my two piece convex on without it coming undone,I notice when I shower the adheisents come lose, and I have to change sooner/often/ even when I tape around it.

   5.  How will I know I herniated the stoma/ area?

   6.  I know I will have more to add but this is just a few off the top of my head.

I do abdominals and my bag stays put. I do all kinds of ab work and I have ever had a problem. However, I was biking this week when I felt a "pop" sensation. I had a pair of skin tight pants on so I kept riding my bike hoping that my pants would keep my bag in place and it did great. I rushed to the bathroom and saw that one side of my wafer popped open and would not stick. I applied some water proof tape (the pink tape) and I went back to my work out. I always carry my "little black bag" with me every where I go...it has my wafer, bag, tape, adhesive removed, sizzors, and Eakin seal...everything I need in an emergency. In my car I keep an extra pair of running shorts and an extra pair of jeans. If I have a little accident, I do not have to worry.

I swim...a lot. I always apply a small mini bag that is closed-ended (no roll system or clip). Then I swim and swim. Now, the tape does come loose when I swim; however, I use my blow dryer to dry it off when I get home and then it sticks just fine again.

As far as exercise...I run 3 times a week , bike at the gym 3 times a week and bike on the road 2 times per week. I find that all of this movement gives me less days to wear my wafer. I do abdominal work a couple times a week and I lift light weights. I do not do heavy lifting because I am still in recovery from my ostomy surgery.

Congratulations on trying to get yourself stronger through exercise. Don't be afraid to have a bag. Just keep some emergency items in your bookbag and go work out! You will be amazed how normal you will feel!

amey is our resident fitness guru! and super woman, lol.
i don't do alot of exercise, but i have done some crunches with no problem and also some walkign and such. I lift things, i don't know what is considered heavy. I don't lug around generators or pressure washers anymore, but i carry the tea things, which are these huge containers of water or tea, they weigh probably 40lbs. ANd i carry my son around, he is 30lbs. Not really heavy lifting i dont' suppose.
I think if it were herniated it would hurt, but i am not sure.

Yup Summer, ya got that right about Amey!!!   My body thinks that it just went thru a major workout after I read her post!  yeah    So now I really don't have to do the exercise....  seriously, I am really prone to internal scar tissue, and have chosen no to do anything, like heavy lifting involving the abd muscles, to create any additional scar tissue (adhesions).  Thank goodness I have not had any other issues with the CD after my original perm ileo was done in 1984, so for me - no additional abd surgery.  I had plenty prior to 1984 with several resections and all.  So at a young age I had NO stomach muscles and even less after each surgery!

Good questions ....   hope our answers help you to decide what to do.  Docs always told me to WALK< WALK<WALK!!!!

WowAmey , thats some great advise. Shortly after my surgery, I had my bag pop off,and I had stool drain all the way down my leg, yah I know great image, but ever since then I have been kinda leary about having that happen to me again[ fear facor, ostomy style] tee hee !? Where or what type is the mini bag? And how do you prevent stool from leaking out all over when you change to your normal bag? And I will keep extra items with me just in case, thanks for the tip. Bluz

Peggy, is it normal to get resections done, and what is that anyways, I'm not to sure about all of the medical terms and what causes them. I do have crohns in my small intestine and is this something that I would have to face down the road? I don't even know how much small intestine I have, not to sound stupid or anything, but I do know alot about my illnesses. Bluz

summerstorm you mean to tell me you don't lug around generators or powerwashers anymore, what did you do before if you don't mind me asking or was that a joke? And those must be some pretty big water bottles, I just got weaker than weak?  Haha, thanks Bluz :-)

:-)  flchurchlady, I think I will start off slow, I'm so afraid of something going wrong, but yet maybe I shouldn't worry so much, I think its because I see the bag and think ahhh, uttt, ohhh, and now that I have an outy called Stella, I anticipate the worst case scenario. Bluz

Depending on your output you may not be able to use the mini pouches. I never could and am envious of anyone who can, lol.

As far as not knowing about your disease, it will come with time. You can't learn everything right away. Just make sure to keep your mind open and keep learning.

As far as exercise, you're right to start off slow. I've been ill (out of work and sitting on my butt) now for almost a year, and am finally able to get back to it, and I'll start by walking. If you're worried about your pouch, you can purchase a belt that will help keep it on during exercise.

Hi judy, only some people can wear the mini pouches, I did wonder about that, I also have been very ill for a long time too. I have had problems since I was born, and than I was diagnosed with just about every and all digestive track disorders and diseases 1987, and they just kept coming and the list goes on, You know I had to be complicated I couldn't just pick one I had to hog em all. You can get a mini bag, but it depends on what type of brand you use.  I use Hollister New Image and they have bags in all types of shapes..mini, 9" medium, and regular.  If I know I am going to be at the gym for an hour or two, I wear a closed mini.  If I am going to the gym and then I have errands to run afterwards, I wear the 9" lock n'roll, and when I go to bed, I wear the regular 12" sack.

And how do you prevent stool from leaking out all over when you change to your normal bag?

Stool leaks...you just have to get used to it.  It runs down my belly, all over my hands, it gets on the wafer..ect.  It's gross, it drives me crazy but it is my life now and I have to make the best of it.  So, I carry cheap disinfectant baby wipes to kill the germs of the stool that leaks on my body and I wash my hands really well when I am done.  Poop is my life...that is all there is to it!

I have pooped on myself in more places and more times than I care to mention.  I have even left my small bag on all day and then it filled while I was driving home.  I was not going to make it home and I could not go into a public restroom with such a BIG BULDGE...remember, I am wearing tight aerobics pants so it is very obveous.  I looked like I grew a "male member" if you know what I mean.  Fortunate for me it was dark outside so I stopped off and fertilized the plants at a local church that was vacant...thank goodness.  I don't the Lord is ganna get too mad at me for that one.  Hey when life hands me lemons....I make lemonade and get on with my life.

amey that is quite a story! although i must say i am glad i don't go to that church, lol.
Bluzy, i used to work at Northern Tool and Equimpment as a salesperson and we also had to do some of the stocking and loading of cars. So that meant if you sold it you had to load it. So, i did have to load things like pressure washers, welders, engines, generators at times. Usually men but those types of things, so they would do it, or at least help, but i did have to do it by myself plenty. I also worked at Circuit city where i had to carry tvs and stuff, iw as pretty strong. Which is why it alsways drives me crazy when my 78 year od grandma, or my 84 year old aunt, say something is too heavy for me and grab it away from me! the other day my aunt had a box, it couldnt' have weighed more than a pound and she went to hand it to me, and she said, oh be careful it's heavy i don't know if you should carry it! GRRR!
anyway the water i am talkign about is the containers we use to fill the tea things at work. If you have ever been to a resturant and seen those silver things that the tea comes out of, we have to carry enough water to fill those up. It's alot of water.
about the minibags, you can wear them but only for a short period, i got annoyed with them, and just gave up on it. When i change a bag, i sit on the toilet, and i pull the bag from the top, while holding some TP on top and then i sort of wrap the TP around the stoma and stuff it under it, to catch it. ANd if gets on the bandaid part i use mouth wash on some TP to clean it up, kills the germs and smells good, lol.
