right colectomy

confused  Just wanted to know if anyone has had this surgery. I am so nervous I just wanted to know someone who has actually had the surgery.

I am not sure what a "right colectomy" actually means. There is a total colectomy (removal of the entire large intestines) and a subtotal colectomy (removal of portion of large intestines). There is too much information in this forum for me to share everything with. I invite you to look around this forum. Try clicking on different topics and reading other people's posts. You will find a lot of people here have had a colectomy surgery.

I agree with Amey. There's a plethora of advice, questions and answers amongst the forum.


Amey- I had my entire colon removed but still have my rectum and a few inches above. Would that be considered a subtotal? I know many who have had their colons removed have their rectums removed as well and wasn't sure what the different terminology for each would be.

If you have any of your sigmoid left, then you have a subtotal. If you have ileo to rectum, then you have a total.

I had a proctocolectomy, which is where they removed your entire colon and rectum. It makes sense that they call it that, because a proctologist is a butt doctor. :-) I feel 100% now, so I have no regrets in having the surgery after suffering for 7 years with Crohn's, which, for me, was chronic diarrhea. sad
