Please if someone has had a reversal could they relate their experience as I am facing one in a few months and would like to hear from someone who has gone through the operation
Hello Jarscott
I had an ileostomy and my stoma was reversed Jan 22, 2008. it was simpler than the original ileostomy. I didn't have to take any prep other clear liquids and nothing after midnight. The procedure was a couple of hours, recovery and then went to my room. I was on solid foods by the second day. I was in the hospital for 2 days. They had me up walking the first day but I did feel a little sick.
I haven't had the diarrhea that people mention. I am having more of an issue with constipation. My bottom was very sore and raw...very uncomfortable. I was told to take Milk of Magnesia. My surgeon said he wasn't concerned if I didn't have a bowel movement for a couple days. However, if I was having problems he wants to know about it. My incision is still very tender and sore but it is no longer covered by bandages and the sutures have been removed. I am still taking an occasional Vicotin for pain. I don't have the urge to constantly use the bathroom but I am experiencing some gas and taking Gas-x for it. I am walking with no problems. The doctor said had no restriction on foods and so far haven't had any real problems with any particular food.
I feel okay. I have another follow-up visit in 2 weeks. The doctor gave me 4 weeks FMLA, but I will probably return to work at 3 weeks depending upon how everything goes. Hopefully, you will have no real problems and everything will be just fine. If you have any more questions please feel free to ask
