Reversal of Ileostomy

Hi

Just wondered if anyone could offer any advice on what things would be like after an Ileostomy reversal following a sub total colectomy (with about 20cm of large bowel left).  Is there any hope of things ever being 'normal'?

I just had my reversal on the 20th after 5 months. Not that long compared to many others.

I have chronic diarrhea for a week and a half now. Have had a number of accidents. My incision has packing and a dressing that needs replacing every day by a home visit nurse. Not sure if that's the norm or not.

I started having movement the next evening after the reversal which the doctor is impressed with. But none of them can tell me how long this diarrhea will last, I must take immodium so I feel confident enough to go out and be active.

I like to hear of others as well.

My Dad had a reversal done on Feb.6, 7 months after the original surgery.  He had some major diarrhea issues while in the hospital following the surgery, once things started going, but since returning home he has started a routine of having a movement every 2 days.....not diarrhea ish....but a formed stool.  His incision has healed, they actually removed the stitches before he left the hospital and we visited the surgeon last week and he was pleased with the progress.  I think every one is different and patience is important.  Good luck.

Yes you're right everyone is different and there are sooooo many stories on here from one extreme to the other - I guess I will just have to wait and see.  Thanks - hope your dad is doing OK.
