Me Again,

Went to my Doctor today and hope I have have an answer to my problem with ileostomy output.

I found out that I have a yeast infection in my amall intestine. Thay think this might be causing my ileostomy output to be fast. I was put on fluconazole and hope it does the job.

They found this out from the stool test from the ileostomy. It would be great if this was the answer to my problems.

Has anyone ever heard of this before. The Dr. told it was caused by all the antibiotics that I have taken over the months. He said it could be causing my problems.

It sure sounds reasonable to me. I know you can get yeast infections in other places, even your mouth, from taking antibiotics. It is more commonly called thrush when it is located in the mouth. And even diaper rash is caused by an imbalance in yeast.

I just checked out the web, and yes, it is something that can happen. I guess this would be a good example of a reason to take probiotics - to balance the bacteria in the digestive tract. At least that is also what I read on another website.

Sounds like you should be cured with the fluconazole, which is the generic form of Diflucan. I had to look that up too!

Did he say how long it would be until you could start seeing some results? Oh Jan, I surely hope that this works for you. Wouldn't that be great? And on the flip side, don't you wish they would have just tested you long before this? But, what is, just What Is at this point. So looking forward is the best route to take. Good Luck to you.

Yes, you can get a yeast infection in other parts of your body which is caused by using too much antibiotics at one time. Back in the early 1980's I had a yeast infection that was in my entire digestive tract. From my throat down into my esophagus and into my stomach and intestines. Dang thing almost killed me. I'm glad your doctor tested and found it early for you.

i never heard of having it in your body, but i am sure you can, i have had thrush ALOT and something i learned, fresh pineapple makes it go away! it doesn't cure it, but it makes the symptoms go away. and lessens the pain and annoyance, of thrush anyway. I don't know if it woudl work on your stomach or not

I'm thinking that this is most likely C. difficile. This normally happens in the colon; hence it's true name - C. difficile colitis. Some antibiotics are well-known for causing this while others don't. Another interesting thing is that people with UC or Crohn's have been known to develop it without taking antibiotics.

Sometimes if you stop taking what caused it, it will clear up on its own. Otherwise we treat our patients with metronidazole (Flagyl) or vancomycin (Vancocin) when they get this.

I thought that was what the yeast infection was too (C DIff=Clostidium Difficile) but according to what I found when I was searching the web, it sounded to me like it is 2 different things. Do you think they are one in the same?

My mom got C Diff when she was on chemo and taking lots of drugs for lung cancer. I also remember the doctors telling me to be VERY careful around her as I was the sole caregiver since C Diff is contagious, right? She also had thrush all the time and had to take those lozenges.... oh, I forget the name of the RX....

Terri -- can you elaborate a little on the difference of the two, if there is a difference?

You're correct, they're two different things. C. difficile is a bacteria where yeast is just that...yeast. Candida albicans is the most common and is what most of us women have had at one time or the other. Yes, C. difficile is contagious so you have to be careful if somebody at home has it. Kissing is a big no-no. LOL  The lozenges you're thinking of might have been Nystatin, but I think there are others too.

Thanks Terri --  Did I read in another post that you are/were a nurse?  I'm not trained (prof.) but just have a lot of experience in the medical field.  And always eager to learn more.  I should have been a nurse.. I really like helping others.
