I'M GETTING REVERSED... YAY?

HI EVERYONE.  I WENT TO SEE MY COLORECTAL SURGEON TODAY AND HE SAYS THAT I NEED TO HAVE A BARIUM ENEMA DONE TO MAKE SURE MY INSIDES ARE HEALED AND WORKING AND NOT LEAKING.  I'VE NEVER HAD A BARIUM ENEMA DONE AND IT DOES NOT SOUND VERY FUN.  HE SAYS THAT IF EVERYTHING COMES BACK GOOD I CAN HAVE MY REVERSAL DONE IN THREE WEEKS.  I CAN'T WAIT ON ONE HAND AND I'M EXTREMELY SCARED ON THE OTHER.  I FEEL SO GOOD NOW.  I HAVE NO PAIN DUE TO CROHN'S AND I'M NOT RUNNING TO THE BATHROOM 25 TIMES A DAY.  I DON'T KNOW HOW TO FEEL.  MY MOTHER SAYS I SHOULD KEEP THE ILEOSTOMY SINCE I FEEL GOOD AND EVERYTHING IS GOING WELL.  SHE IS RIGHT BUT I CAN'T WEAR THIS BAG ANYMORE.  MY SKIN IS TAKING A BEATING.  IT'S RED, IRRITATED AND EXTREMELY ITCHY.  SOME DAYS I WANT TO RIP MY HAIR OUT IT'S SO ITCHY.  MY SURGEON SAID THAT I WILL HAVE LOOSE WATERY BOWEL MOVEMENTS FOR about A WEEK THEN I SHOULS BE HAVING MORE FORMED STOOL.  BUT HE DID SAY THAT I WILL STILL BE HAVING about 3 OR 4 BOWEL MOVEMENTS A DAY.  WHAT DO YOU GUYS THINK?  LET ME KNOW IF YOU GUYS HAVE ANY EXPERIENCE WITH THIS.

I had my reversal about 7 weeks ago. I am very happy with it - but I had UC, not Crohn's. The X rays before the surery were no big deal for me. No pain, and it was easy to hold in the contrast dye. I got up and went to the bathroom to expell it normally after the x rays. I had a very easy time recovering from reversal surgery, no incontinence, no urgency, and no butt burn or excessive gas. I am surprised your doctor would tell you such short recovery times, however. I am still not having very formed stools. I am told it can take up to a year for things to get completely healed. Also, I go more than 3 or 4 times a day, and I think that it is very common to go 10-20 times a day right after surgery. I don't mind at all, though, because I can hold it fine, and have no pain.

Bella--I did have the barium enema before my reversal many years ago.  It isn't a big deal for most people and it doesn't hurt.  I did have perianal fistulas which made things difficut, but not impossible.  Don't worry too much about it and like sfgiantsjo said, you just get up and go to the bathroom...there was a toilet attached to the xray room at my hospital:)  The reversal, on the other hand, didn't work for me...I now have a permanent ileo and very happy!

As far as your skin goes, is the opening on your wafer too big?  Do you use paste or a seal?  Stomas change size when they are new and that could be causing the raw skin.  Even after 8 years+ with my stoma, my skin is in excellent shape...Even if you only have your ileo for a few weeks more, get the opinion of your stoma nurse...don't live in pain.

THANKS FOR THE INFO.  AS FAR AS MY SKIN GOES MY HOME HEATH CARE NURSE JUST DISCHARGED ME ON FRIDAY SO I DON'T KNOW IF I CAN STILL CALL AND ASK HER.  AND AS FAR AS THE WAFER I'M USING IT'S THE HOLLISTER PRE CUT ONE.  MY STOMA DOESN'T CHANGE THAT MUCH AND WHEN IT DOES I JUST CUT THE WAFER TO ADJUST THE SIZE.  I'M ALSO USING THE HOLLISTER TWO PIECE POUCHING SYSTEM WITH THE FILTER.  IT SUCKS AND I HATE.  I HAVE TO ORDER NEW SUPPLIES FOR THE FIRST TIME BY MYSELF THROUGH BYRAM HEALTHCARE.  DOES ANYONE USE THEM AS WELL TO ORDER SUPPLIES?  ALSO I LIKE THE SHORTER 9 INCH BAG.  I HATE THE LONG 12 INCH ONE.  IT MAKES ME LOOK LIKE I HAVE A PENIS! blush   ANYWAY SO THAT'S MY RANTING FOR THE NIGHT.  HOPE TO HEAR SOMETHING SOON.  THANKS AGAIN.

Bella--you can call the Stoma Nurse at your hospital...or, even make an appointment to see them in the office. Your doc's appoitment person should be able to make the appt for you...let them know you are having problems and need to see one right away.

Try a different brand if you don't like the Hollister...I myself love the Hollister filter, no stickers needed, since I always forgot the sticker when I hopped in the shower!! I know what you are saying about the longer bags...alot of us fold them up under our undies and they aren't so bad. I am too lazy to have to empty more with the shorter ones, I like to eat too much:)

Bella unlike everyone else my barium enama Was painful. and bye the time thay were done I felt sick to my stomach.If this happens to you just think to your self that it will be worth it inthe long run when you dont have that bag anymore
