hi redee,
i've had major rectal prolapse and a small rectocele too (two different problems). had it fixed with the STARR procedure. the surgery went very well, and it would have been a total success if i didn't have colonic inertia as well. i had the CI before the STARR, it wasn't the procedure that caused the CI, i know that b/c i had the sitz marker test before the STARR and it showed CI.
there are several types of surgeries for prolapse repair. i think i've read something about if the rectocele is too big than the STARR is not the right option. if you have only prolapse, than i think the STARR will be great for you. it's a very easy procedure. i was less than 24 hrs. in the hosp. and recovery was a peace of cake, honestly it was!
please consult with more than one dr. about your specific situation and comparing with the different surgeries to decide which one will suit you the most.
about non-surgical - the only non-surgical option i know of is biofeedback therapy. i've never heard of success trories with that, including my self - didn't help me at all... but you can try it. maybe if you have a very small prolapse, you can benefit from it. but i'm not impressed with this specific therpy.
so anyway, best of luck to you!!!
