Diet and flares of rectal stump

My daughter has a temporary ileostomy and has been having flares of her rectal stump every now and then. Could her diet have anything to do with those flares, even though the rectum is not connected anymore? I know that diet affects her output of her ostomy, but does it affect the rectum too?

Good question.
I wonder this too.
If I guess, on one hand you could say no because nothing is going through the rectum, so it wouldn't have that irritation.
BUT,
since u/c is an autoimmune dz and if what you eat upsets your immune system,like at allergy, to where it has to attack, and what it has been attacking is colon/rectum area, then it would still want to go after the rectum....?
I'd ask the GI Dr.
or better yet, experiment with food to see the outcome.
I plan on that as soon as I'm off steroids.
FYI-I couldn't eat any dairy b4 surgery. and I just enjoyed pizza and a glass of milk and no upset "stumpy", but like I said, I'm still on 40 mg. pred.
P.S. I'm very sorry about your baby having to deal with this tortorous dz (and you for that matter). I'll be praying for your family.
P.P.S.S. I did a kids ccfa camp a couple of years ago and met a few young-ins who've gone through j-pouch surgery and are doing fantastically-completely normal (even out-put was normal!) and some with ostomy bags. TOUGH KIDS!

This is just me, so take it for what it's worth...

A lot of times I will drink coffee in the morning at work. Usually by the time I finish my second cup I have the urge to empty my stump. Otherwise--if I don't drink any coffee--my output is no more than once a day or so.

I know you were asking about foods causing flares, but I can at least say certain foods cause me to feel a need to pass mucous.

No, what your daughter is experiencing is UC in the retained cuff.  This is easily treated with 5ASAs.  Talk with her GI or surgeon.

Hi,

Before I had my illeostomy, I was on a dairy free diet because of how sick it made me.  After the surgery, I was really surprised to find out that I had LOTS of "mucusy stuff" coming out of my stump.  If I avoid dairy, all dairy, then it is fine.  Try to experiment with food.  See what works.
