Removing my colon was the best decision I ever made. Colon inertia led me to a bowel movement every 2 weeks regardless of how many laxatives I took. I had my colon removed Oct. 2008 and have adjusted fairly well. I have silly questions that only someone who has had this surgery can answer. They left my rectum but removed my entire large intestine and connected my small intestine. After several weeks my bowel movements scheduled themseves to twice, once in the morning and once at night. If I cheat and eat the BAD foods I have more (who can leave the BAD foods out completely?). My silly questions are: Does anyone else have bad gas problems and what do you do about it? And, Does your stomach rumble and make noise all the time?

So you have a jpouch right?
well i have a perm ileo, but sometimes my tummy makes awful rumblies and i get gas if i let myself get hungry before i eat. Or if i eat certain foods that can cause gas. I just take a few gas-x BEFORE i eat those foods and make sure that i dont let myself get hungry.
It may work differenty with a jpouch

I have a permanent ileostomy, too, so I don't know the answer to your question, but I just wanted to say how happy I am to hear that you're doing well and are happy that you had surgery. :-) Even with an ostomy, there are certain foods that we should stay away from to avoid a blockage, but I agree, it sure is hard to do!

I had my colon removed back in Aug. 2008 and I also had my small intestine connected to my rectum. The answer to your question about the stomach rumble, your belly rumbles because the small intestine since it is no longer being held up by the colon and is able to move more freely. The rumble is the small intestine moving around. it happens to me all the time, especially for after I eat, since it does alot of moving while it is digesting. sometimes too my small intestine moves around while I am laying down, so I always have those rumble sounds. As I started to feel that area more, I also feel it move around sometimes as well. As for the gas, I usually do not have gas problems, so I would not know what to do, sorry. But I hope this answers your question about the tummy rumbling. Well, welcome to the board and it is nice to meet you.

Hi My name is Michele

I had a total colectomy in May 2008. I a have an ileostomy and have been doing great with it. I could reconnect but I am very afraid that life would be very difficult from everything I have been reading about reconnecting. I am at the point that I just want to stay with a permanent ileostomy. Is it difficult to live with a permanent ileostomy?

Hi,
I am having a proctocolectomy (removal of entire colon and rectum) on march 30. I have colonic inertia and rectal inertia. I have had it for 17 years. I will be having a J pouch put in. I have been told that J pouches don't always work well for people who have them done for colonic inertia because our pelvic floors are weak. I would love to hear from anyone who had a J pouch done for colonic and rectal inertia. Thanks!

TO: MICHELE - DID THEY LEAVE YOUR RECTUM IN? IF YOUR RECTUM WAS NOT REMOVED, YOU SHOULD GO AHEAD AND HAVE THEM DISCONNECT THE ILEOSTOMY. PEOPLE WHO HAVE THEIR SMALL INTESTINES HOOKED TO THEIR RECTUMS DO VERY WELL AFTER SURGERY.
