Have a colonoscopy before surgery or not?

Hi,

I recently had a colonoscopy (3/10) and found out that they found pre-cancerous cells.  My GI wants to do a repeat colonoscopy on 4/9 to see if he sees the same and do more biopsies.  If he does, then surgery will be a definite.  Surgery has always been on the back burner as an option because of the extent of my disease.

I am debating on just skipping the colonoscopy and meeting with a surgeon to move forward with surgery.  I have had severe pancolitis for over 6 years now, meds only work for a short time and I always have symptoms. 

Any advice, opinions, suggestions would be great.

I would think if they found pre cancerous cells then I would definatley have the surgery. But thats my opinion

If you are moving forward with the surgery, you will have to prep for it just like you have to prep for a colonoscopy. If you are serious about having the surgery, I would skip the colonoscopy...... why torture yourself like that twice if you don't have to!

no need for a scope if you are doing surgery!
My GI said i would need a scope the last time i met with him, which was like 3 weeks before surgery and i said, "why, can't they look at it once they take it out?" He just laughed and said, i'm taking that as a no to doing it?

The surgeon said it was dumb to get one right before surgery, it was coming out doesnt mater what it looks like!

I agree, no need for a colonoscopy if you decide on surgery. I'm not much of a risk taker but if cancer was in my future I would have the offending organ removed. I would sleep better at night knowing I didn't have to think about the risk any longer. The other benefit is getting off the dang UC meds. Oh, and did I mention feeling healthy?
