full laparoscopy/hand assisted?

hello everyone,

i'm planning to have my colon removed some time in the near future. i asked my surgoen wether they perform full laparoscopy or hand assisted and he said that they perform full laparoscopy and that at the end of the surgery they make a cut in the vaginal wall and take the whole colon out from there... YIKES!!

i wanted to know if any of you women who had surgery already had it performed this way? has anyone heard of this method?

i don't know, i kinda freaked out, i'm not sure i want it done this way, cause maybe it's better to have it taken out from a cut in the abd and not to mess up with the vagina and pelvic, esp since my whole pelvic is problematic as it is.


what do you think of it? actually, i don't mind having the bikini line scar, so maybe it's better to avoid messing with my pelvic?

or maybe there's nothing to be affraid of and i should enjoy not having a scar?

i'd really like to hear your opinions on this.

My surgery was lap. with hand assisted. I have one very small cut on my side between my belly button and my pelvis, then he went through the belly button, and then a bikini cut down low right above my pubic hair. I thought the bikini cut was only used for my doctor to help attach the small intestine to the rectum; I didn't realize he pulled the colon out through there. He told me that was what the hand assisted part was for....I won't see him again until the end of April, but I will definitely ask him about that. I know before surgery when he was talking about making a couple small incisions, I asked how the colon could fit through such small holes and he said it compressed pretty small...maybe I didn't understand what he said. I'll definitely ask for you, though. Also, maybe someone else will read this and know for sure!

thanks Janie, i'll be very happy if you can ask his opinion wether he thinks making a cut in the vaginal wall has a high risk of damaging the vagina/pelvic.

i've heard of women who had colectomy and after the surgery they had probs of stools coming out of their vagina!!!!! how scary is that??? but i have no idea how their surgery was done and if it's b/c of this reason. i think i'm just gonna tell him that i don't want it done this way and to go a head and make the cut as made in the hand assisted surgery. i think it's more safe than messing up with the pelvic.

I had the lap surgery and the cut in the bikini area where they removed the colon. I don't know where else they could remove the colon through other than through the bikini area unless you are having the open surgery.

I haven't had any problems with the area- the doctor used the surgical glue instead of stitches.
