Stoma still bothering me

Five weeks ago today I had my colectomy and since week 2 the skin around my stoma has been sore. My nurse said it was sore because it was taking longer to heal due to prednisone use.

Well, I am still having issues--- it burns or stings around the stoma. The separation I had between the stoma and the skin around it has healed but it is still sore. I haven't had any leaks thank God. My appliance works fine and I change my bag every 3-4 days.
Luckily, I go to the doctor on Monday for follow-up and will talk to him about this. I have two more months for step 2 and then 6 weeks after that for the takedown. THat is a lot of time to deal with the soreness.

it probably is because of the pred use that causes heal time to lengthen ALOT. Hopefully it will start to feel better soon.

Try dabbing a little Milk of Magnesia on your skin  before you put on your next appliance.  The enzymes from your stoma output can really irritate your skin. This might help.  It's worked for me.

Hi Jackie

Are you using any extra products on the skin to help - I know you can get powders etc to help with skin problems.

As you will probably know I am just over 4 weeks post op - the area around my stoma is still swollen hard and very tender to touch.  With me it was the site of the stoma that they pulled my colon out through so i guess that specific site had quite a bit of trauma during the OP. 

Did you manage to get out last weekend with your family?  How did you get on?

How is everything else going now?

Yes, I use stoma powder and it helped to heal up the separation between skin and stoma. I am going to try the milk of mag.

I have been getting out more and more. I may go shopping today with my older daughter. How have you been?

Did they pull the colon out thru the stoma opening on you? I never thought of that and how much trauma that site would experience... makes sense. Keep moving and walking as it will help to get the soreness worked out. You sound like you are doing great. Good job!!!

My colon was removed through an incision above the pubic area... I noticed that when I changed the bag it is sore for a few hours and then it gets better.
Like today, it feels better. Tylenol helps a bit.

Hi everyone!
My bag is lasting 48-50 hrs. I dream for 80 hr time I had two wks ago!

Skin around my stoma also remains inflamed but probably due to leakage and harsh enzymes from stoma. I was only on 5mg Prednisone 5 months prior to surgery.

JBlue, Think I will try Milk of Mag too; ....with no powder or protective barrier wipes. Will let you know how it goes.

It will get back to there -- you will find that perfect match for you. I know it is hard when treating a skin issue, but once you find the right combination, you will be good to go. You are learning so much in a short period of time. Some never have to deal with skin problems. You will be our skin issue specialist on this forum! Keep your chin up - it will work out.

I am also dealing with skins soreness and incredible itching!!!!!  I am 6 weeks post-op and i was told could be becasue my stoma is rather flat and small so i am using those Hollister washer rings and the Adapt powder.  I was using the Adapt paste but found that a couple of times i have needed to take the bag off within a few hours (due to leak - my fault entirely for not preparing the skin) and the paste would be very hard to remove - like superglue!

my main prob is gettin used to cutting the bag correctly and putting it on at the right angle - i think i am getting there now but i am still nervous about it. x

karen, are you using a convex wafer? They really help with keeping the output away from your skin when you have a short/flat stoma...

No i am using Coloplast sensura - my nurse did mention something like that to me a while back but i wont see her until end next week.  i will try to order some then, thanks..xxx

Finally feeling less pain and it isn't constant. In fact there have been a few times that I have forgotten I have a bag usually when I am wearing regular clothes- Jeans...

I am going to work soon , so I am trying to figure out what to wear and how it looks.

tcktwbd- hope everything is holding up.

Hello All:
I am new to this site. I had a colostomy two years ago this past May 2010. Over time I have developed intense itching all around the site, including outside the wafer. I have tried changing appliances three times, I use neutragena everytime I change the appliance, make sure all is very dry (by the use of a hair dryer), I use skin barrier (now on my 3rd type-stingless). I have seen my wound care nurse several times, but nothing seems to help. The nurse suggested I try desenx foot powder for athletes foot, but does not work. I am at my wits end with this itching. It does stop for a period of time when I go to a different type and brand of of wafer. Right now I am using hollister. I thought it might be an internal yeast infection. Does anyone have a suggestion that I have not listed? I am getting desperate.
