why high sed rate???

I'm so upset. My sed rate is over 130 (as it was before surgery). I thought all the inflammation went when they took my colon and rectum. I don't understand. Is it common to have a high sed rate after surgery? I'm crying so hard--so afraid the crohn's is back.

Sammies--take a breath, don't worry until you have answers! What has your doc said? Will you be going for a CT Scan?

Sometimes we get little pockets of fluid left behind after surgery...remember that a proctocolectomy is a MAJOR procedure! Personally, I had to have a drain put in a few month's after surgery when I started with a fever and became really tired:( I didn't expect it and it was a surprise...maybe you have something going on too.

Have you been feeling okay? Is your bottom all healed? how about your incision? Let us know what your doc plans to do...sometimes a course of antib's can do the trick, depending on what it is.

OHIO76--you have a place in heaven. Surgeon decided I don't need a cat scan b/c he sees no sign of blockage, adhesion, or obstruction. Things are working so well for my ostomy and my endurance and strength have improved. My incision is healed and my rectum wound which started at 10cmx7cm deep is now 2x3!! Even with the food poisoning set back--which was a major one--the rectum wound healed. He did say, as you have so patiently reminded me, that I was sick, sick, sick before I went in, my colon was almost completely diseased, and this was MAJOR surgery. So, he thinks all the cramping is from the small intestine kinking, twisting, and getting used to its new role.

I should be grateful and excited. But I'm so worried about such a high sed rate. Good news is that my white blood cell count did come down again in two weeks 11 down to 6 and my reds, although quite low, are on the rise. Protein is still low along with albumin and carotene.

Sammies -- Like Ohio said, take a deep breath. Relax. Just let your body heal and recover. It's good they are monitoring your labwork, but don't get totally hung up on it. Be sure to ask your doctor all your questions so you are fully aware of why levels are high or low. Most of what is happening right now is just your body getting back into the swing of things! Take Care....

I don't think I've ever had it checked. interesting.....

Well, then Sammies-surgery alone can cause inflammation. Maybe the # will go down.

What's your doc say.

(p.s.-don't ever say What's up doc? to your dr.-I guess they hate that.)

talked with GI this am. Liver is more of a worry than the sed rate--alk phosphatase number is 357--high. Liver enzyme numbers are good.

GI is still worried about the cramping I have and wants to dialate my stoma even though surgeon says no need--no evidence of obstruction. So GI said we'll give it a little more time.

hemoglobin and hemtocrit are still very low. Protein/prealbumin and albumin still low too.

ugh--I just want to stop worrying!
