Hi, hope everyone is having a good morning?

My 4 yr old had a freak accident and we have a ostomy for 8 weeks, i am looking for some help.

she is very active and we are having a hard time finding a bag that works for her.  We are changing her bag about ever 6 hrs.

We found out that Infent bags are to small and they do not make toddler size, so we are useing adult bag.

I am open to try anything....

i am very sorry to hear your child has been hurt!!!

Does she have an ileostomy or a colostomy?

Are you using the mini adult bags?

Tell us what you are doing when you apply the bag and then maybe we can see what might need changing or give you some tips!

Thank you, she has a colostomy,

did not know that their is a mini adult bags? who carries these?

we use a adhisive remover to remover the used bag.(which has lasted about 6 hr.)
then we wash with warm water, no soap, if any adhisive is left we use stomahesive powder to get the rest off,
then we wash with warm water again, then spray with barrier spray.
we use eakin rings on the bag and we spread the eakin ring out and we put it on her, then we hold it for about 2-3 min to make sure we have a good seal.

then after playing out side or inside it starts to leak. Then we start all over again.....

the bags i use the hollister new image have mini bags.


Part of your problem may be the barrier spray, that can lessen the wear time. I dont know if you could do this with her, but using a hair dryer on the wafer right after you put it on helps alot.
Just put the heat on for about 45 seconds, then press your hands down on it for a while.

If she is sitting up when you are putting it on, try having her lay down, or if she is laying down try standing up, just a dif postion that might help.
Im not sure but using the stomahesive powder to get it off might be keepign you from getting a good seal, also make sure the area is compelty dry before you put the new one on

Ok i just went and looked at the site where i buy my supplies and there are alot of different kinds of bags for kids. What kind are you using? Some of them look bigger than others.

we are useing coloplast, marlen.  These are the ones that we have tryed. 

I will not use the powder next time.  I just tried the hair dryer and this on just lasted for about 4 hr.  She is laying down, so i will have her sit up on the one in the morning.

I will call hollister first thing in the morning.  Thank you,

I hate this it seems like we can not leave the house....hope we can find what is going on.

I was given some samples from Hollister for swimming... They included a shorter bag than I'm used to. I would think that would help. Have you talked to the manufacturer? They helped a lot when I was trying to figure out the difference and all that.

have her kind of sit laid backlike, not up straight, like leaned back on her hands, if that makes sense.

There was an assura one for kids also, and convatec had one.

the barrier spray is probably more the problem than the powder you might also try the sure seals, it will help keep sweat and stuff from getting around it.
They are these clear saran wrap like things that go over the wafer.

Hi Momof3,

I also use Coloplast (I use the Assura Extended-Wear wafer/flange), and the drainable pouches that go with these wafers.

I wanted to let you know that with this wafer, there are actually 3 sizes of bags that go with them--the "standard" adult size (which was too big for me!), the "mini" bag which is what I use--it is shorter than the standard, and the "midi" bag which is the shortest of all.


The product number of the mini bags is #13965 (if you talk to Coloplast, they can just look it up--it is the same everywhere).

It's the powder that's making the wafer not stick. I use Unisolve wipes to remove old adhesive, ivory soap (no additives), rinse well, pat dry, air dry, then allcare adhesive wipe, let dry, flatten the ekin seal by pressing it in your hand, then cut off the outter rim of it so it is smaller in diameter, then pull the hole open enough to slide it over the stoma, then put the wafter on. Use foam soap around the rim of the bag so you don't have to apply as much pressure as you click it on her. That should do it. If I don't flatten the eakin, it rises up on me. That powder just makes the skin like a dry desert, nothing will stick to it. If I get a peristomal skin burn, I put on the flattened eakin, gently lift the stoma a bit with a Q-tip and spray some powder right on the skin just below the stoma, but I don't get any on the eakin so it doesn't get dry and so the wafter won't stick. I have an ileostomy but maybe the principal is the same? Good Luck. esoR.

we will stop useing the powder and spray....

I called Hollister and they are sending samples(of course they wont be her tomorrow..haha)

Esor-i saw trying to look for the allkare(allcare) adhesive wipes and can not find adhesive wipes, but all that is coming up is adhesive remover wipes?

Little E - i called coloplast and they are sending samples of the "midi"....

Summer Storm-I will have her sit slightly up, with her arms behind her.

Today she is going for her first check up..hope everything looks good..after this i am making the wound,ostomy nurse meet with me...she nice but everything she has suggested has not worked so she is bring her boss....maybe she will have some good suggestions also?

Well, her check up is good, they think that is his doing good.

We meet with the wound Nurse, tried a new bag...she tried Convatec Activelift and it has a flex band...so we are hoping this one will be the one, it has lasted for over 8 hrs.  The good news if it is not the one we still have the sample coming

Well, this email has sat for about 1hr, because she is itching and has red bumps around the wafer...lovely(cry, sob, LAUGH)Called the doc. he thinks it was the from all the cemical that we have used, so we gave her benadril, and the bumps are gone, so we will see what it looks like tomorrow morning, if she has the bumps we have to change her bag AGAIN...like that won't hurt her skin....All i want is to go one day with out a leak...

i thought of soemthing, are you checking the size of the stoma before you cut the hole still? it can change drasically in the first few months, and if its not a good fit it could be causing problems

we are cutting it right up the the stoma...This bag has stayed on today, with running in 85 degrees heat, on the trampoline, rideing bikes and going on bug hunts.....But the wafer is still itching her.  So I am going to change it tomorrow and see what her skin looks like under the wafer.  If it in not red and bumpy, we found a bag.. but she is still itching so i am not getting my hopes up.(keep your fingers crossed.

Summerstorm Thank you for all the suggestion and I will let you know if we found a bag or not, I got a call from hollister and they are sending out alot of free samples and they are sending it 2nd day.  Coloplast is sending out some sample to but they did not call me?  I also called Convetec

hollister, coloplast and convatec are all good...
its been said but here you go.
1. dont use the powder. apply when skin is completely dry.
2. make sure you cut the hole to fit nice and snug at the base of the stoma. applying some form of moderate heat to the wafer will make the adhesive stick better.

the itching should go away after four weeks of good care (no leaks on to the skin) but if she needs medicine to help, you can buy childrens anti itch cream over the counter.
