Hey Trigirl!
I'm so excited for you.
I know you must be scared. That's ok. I cried a lot. But I still have no regrets.
I wear the mini bags. I asked an ostomy bag rep. once about using pediatric sizes, and they acted like that was the dumbest question. So I got the small bags, and they are fine. The bags they give you in the hospital are so big and ugly. They have much nicer ones.
I didn't get to chose where my ostomy went (either time). The nurses told me the Dr. knows where to put it, and that was that. It seems to me that most people have them in the same place, pretty much. Have you talked to your Dr. about where he's going to make it?
It's fine where it is.
You'll be happy to know that since my surgery, i've been so much more active than I've been in years. And I recently started a running program (usually, I'm NOT a runner). But I'm doing a program called couch to 5K. That will help me get in shape for a 5k in 8 weeks. When I run, I either wear the tighter shorts and it holds the bag down, or I tuck the bag inside my underwear. I don't fold it up, b/c it's a small size and it doesn't need folded. I swim regularly. My daughter and I have a season pass to a local water park. My husband and I ride bikes regularly too, and the bag doesn't affect that at all!
You're going to be sore for a while. But don't fret. In a few months, you'll be doing your triathelon training again. AND you won't have to worry about poop breaks. :)
