how would you answer this question?
I was discussing with a friend how i was sick with IBD and had emergency surgery and now feel better one year later. they said:

"so now that you are better, what are you planning to do so that you do not get sick again?"

i cannot seem to explain IBD to people. they somehow think i am in control of it? or maybe they mean well and i am sensitive. maybe i am in control and just don't know. again, i question my sanity and my actions and how i got IBD.

I would tell them "you can't control IBD anymore then you can control getting a sinus infection, headache, etc... It's an internal disease not caused by me. If you're more interested about my condition, there is a ton of info online, look it up". and I would leave it as that.

What I have learned is that there are SO MANY people who lack common sense and say things that just don't make sense. You just have to realize this and not be sensitive to others ignorance.

So many times I have said If only I stuck more closely to a prescribed diet, or gone to the dr earleir or agreed to harshes meds earlier. The fact is I think we all do all what we can to stay healthy. Someone with Cancer would never be asked those same questions. It is the reality that those of us with this disease live with. I have found that not even the specialists who spend their careers thinking about how to prevent or manage this disease have any clear idea of how it begins in the first place. In my opinion the only way to stay healthy is to simply appreciate the health you have because to waste energy on trying to change that only takes away from the pleasure that feeling well can bring.
