I have been trying some products from different companies to find something that might stay on for 4 days (is that too much to ask?) and not leak.

I haven't had much success with one piece. Am actually wondering what the pros and cons of the two kinds are. Could you guys and gals enlighten me.

Am working thru some moldable flanges Convetac that fit great around stoma and don't leak from inside but outside gets wet and seems to easily peel off.

Coloplast had strong flanges but inside leaked and gave me bumps.

Hollister leaked from inside too.

So far not great reviews from me. I do like the paste and eakin seals. Would rather not have to use so much STUFF.

Are there other brands you might sugggest? Oh and do you like one piece or two?

2 piece durahesive moldable convex barrier with snap on bags from convatec are purely awesome.
call and ask for these samples (order numbers below)

they dont leak and stay on pretty good -no glue needed

Trigirl--if you are having things fall off when they get wet, it's something with your prep...can you give us a step by step and details as to products you use and how.

Wafers should stick when wet (and I've only had one problem with that and it was the skin prep sample I tried)...they do suggest not showering/swimming with a new wafer for 24 hours, could that be it?

Thanks for the replies.

I have tried doing things a number of different ways.

1) Spray on stuff and then some powder and then the flange.
2) Above with eakin seal around flange
3) Just powder and paste on flange and apply
4) Clean skin just flange (that lead to major leaks around stoma)

I swim almost everyday for my job :(Swim instructor part time) so 24 hours to seal might be tricky.

Do you think sitting in the hot tub would make them fall off? Sometimes I go in after the lessons to warm up. They fall off fitness classes too so maybe it body heat.
When I don't do anything all day they don't fall off usually, but who doesn't move and workout and bath in a day?

that is probably a major factor...I think that most manufacturers recommend the wafers stay dry for a period of time (I think it is 12 or 24 hours), you may want to see what yours recommends.

I believe in the 'less is more' option! That would simply be to wash with soap (one without moisturizer) and water, dry, apply Eakin Seal to Wafer, apply wafer to skin and most importantly attach pouch!! If I have an irritated spot I will use a little powder only. I shower and swim but always change after and I usually go with 3-4 days of wear time.

Something that works for me is a Sure Seal. It protects the wafer tape from moisture/water so that I can just dry off with a towel...its like saran wrap with sticky stuff on one side! You might want to order a few samples and give them a try...also, change your appliance, when you get home, AFTER you've gone swimming. That way you'll have some time before it gets wet again.

I am pretty sure that Cecilia uses a wafer that is all plastic. Maybe it's Coloplast....you could check that out and see if it might be a better one for you.

Do you need convexity? If you don't, there is one that is for athletes that is really just like 'skin' and I think it's called Cymed...go to their website and request samples of those, too!!!

Haven't heard of sure seal. Will ask the store if they have any. I did try a coloplast which was plastic and stayed pretty well. I can't remember what went wrong with those but can always give it another try. Have some of the flanges left but not the bags.

Will for sure cut down on powder and paste. Used those mainly when I had the sore around the stoma. They are starting to go away. So probably don't need all that anyway.

Have tried convexity but didn't really need it. Checking out Cymed right after I close this!! So excited to hear about it =)

Phone the Cymed company. THIS was the company I've been looking for since I saw Ben Moon in an add! I didn't remember what the name of the company was. I am so excited. Thanks for the help. They said I might get it by next week and then I will report back.

One thing he said was thinking I should get 7 days out of any system was very optimistic. I thought I was supposed to get a long time of wear, so maybe that's my problem too.

Said they would send some thickening stuff you put in pouch? Doesn't it just make the pouch heavier and more bulky? No way do I want heavier or bulkier.

Glad to hear you were able to call and get samples!!! My guess is that the cymed ones will really help based on your lifestyle :-)

I can get 5-6 days of wear time, but I change on Mondays and Fridays, that way I never have 'what if days' and I've been able to keep my skin in really good shape!

I cannot wait to hear how the samples work out!!!!!!

Well i dont think its the hottub, we have one and i have spent hours, like 3 or 4 in it at a time with no problem.
I agree that its the skin prep. Im not sure about staying out of water, cause i always change right after a shower, so im not usually wet again right away, lol.
But the sure seals really do help!

oh and the thickening stuff
i use these geltabs when i go out,because it keeps it distbruited more evenly. Like you know when its all liquid it goes straight to the bottom it gets all heavy? that doesnt happen with those tabs.

I personally do not like the 2 piece. I have a bunch of leftover Durahesive moldable barriers, and bags. I couldnt stand them. The barriers seemed to fall off in just a couple of days, and worse, I had a couple of major blowouts from the bag blowing off from the pressure in the middle of the night. And yes, I had them snapped on good and tight. In my opinion the 2 piece only adds another failure point. Second I dont really see any point to having a two piece, because its not like I would go change the bag and keep the barrier anyways.

Now, what I found that works best for me is the 1 piece holister opaque clipless bag. I also use the holister seal rings. They are just like the convatec eakin seals, but I find they work much better. I can get these to stay on for 5 days easily.

My steps are 1) Peal off old appliance. 2) clean area and stoma with a wet wipe. 3) Dry area with a paper towel or toilet paper. 4) Wipe with a prep wipe (from convatec). 5) Mold and place holister seal ring. 6) Peel and stick new appliance. 7) Hold on tight for 30 seconds.

NASCARon- didn't mean to be so abrupt last time and shoot you down. Was just my frustrations coming out. I really appreciate reading what you wrote tonight and have tried some of your other suggestions also. I do have dial soap. I did get the Eakin seals last time you wrote about them and have the moldable flanges. Not sure what "Sure Seals" are but will go looking. What company makes them? I haven't heard of Smith and Nephew either but will look.

Thanks again for taking the time and being patient enough to write this all down. Will try all the steps and hope for the best.

PS I wore the ostomy belt to swim today and it was good! You're right, I didn't feel it much but someone did ask me what was not tucked into the back of my bathing suit. (Bathing suit lower than waist in back) It only bothered me when my fitted waist band on dress pants didn't need any extra bulk. Some pants I tied tonight were just fine with it. I just might get the hang of this all yet.

sureseals are these saran wrap like things that you put over your wafer and it keeps it from getting wet. i dont know who themaker is, but i ordermine from edgepark

I can vouch for the Sure Seals, too (thanks, NASCARon!). I had my surgery in June and it took awhile for me and my WOC nurse to figure out what would work for me. My leaks would always be under the flange, and they weren't wet, either. We finally settled on using convex barriers, convex rings and OstoBond cement. Things have been pretty good since then. But when I heard about Sure Seals, I thought I'd give them a try since that's where my leaks would occur. I've been using them for several weeks now and have had only one small leak, but that was because I was laying on my right side as the bag was filling up and fell asleep. It wasn't even anything I had to take a shower for. I won't go out without using a Sure Seal now - I do feel more secure. I also wear an ostomy belt and even though I've never had a leak because of my bag falling off, that also makes me feel secure. I'm sure it will be a long time yet before I quit carrying my emergency kit with me wherever I go, though. smilewinkgrin
