Question about final step (take down)

My son is scheduled for his 3rd and final step of the J Pouch surgery on Dec 15. All prayers are appreciated as is any words of advice or anything anyone thinks we should know. Also, he's at college, but he is skipping his "j term" so he'll be home recovering for 6 weeks. Do you think he'll be OK when he goes back? Thanks in advance.

He should be fine to return to school after 6 weeks. He might have higher frequency but it will get better with time. The most important bit of knowledge for him is to be PATIENT. Expect to see improvement in function every 6 weeks, not days. Have him keep a food diary. Some foods (like fresh fruits and vegetables) might zip though him and cause discomfort but its temporary. Or it might not. Everyone's recovery is different. Also introduce him to metamucil wafers and imodium or lomotil. These will help slow the bowel and absorb excess liquid. If he's so inclined he can visit www.j-pouch.org If he's like every other college kid I know he probably just wants to move on!
