So I started to get a bad pain in my right calf and lower leg last night while in bed. I didn't think much of it and finally fell asleep. This morning the pain had faded and then returned in the early afternoon. It gradually got worse and by the time it was excrutiating, my doctors office was closed:( I ended up going to urgent care. The doctor said it didn't look like I had a blood clot. She had several labs drawn, gave me a shot of B12 and a shot of Toradol. The pain has subsided from the Toradol but just hoping it doesn't return in the night. One of the doctors I spoke with said that patients who have undergone a colectomy are usually deficient in Vitamin B12. Do any of you get weekly Vit B12 shots? I have been SOOOOOOO tired lately and am wondering if this would benefit me. My hemoglobin is also borderline low and my GI doc prescribed iron supplements for me to take 3xday! I should prob be more religious about
taking those... Has anyone else experienced these crazy calf pains? Can they also be related to electrolyte insufficiency? I am thinking my potassium was also low which caused the pains. I know that I am no longer going to absorb nutrients the same way without my colon but is there a way to down when I am running "low" before it gets too bad. I try really hard to stay well hydrated but sometimes I forget to drink as much... any tips are much appreciated! Thx:)

that can be dehydration, or low potassium, try some bananas.
You can buy sublingual b12 it dissolves under your tounge so you get it all.
and if you take other vitamins, use chewable.
hope you dont have that problem anymore!

When I get that (and yes, it can be excruciating - I can feel the after effects a couple of days afterwards), it usually means, for me, that I'm low on salt. I usually get them when I'm laying down in bed at night. A couple of times I've gotten them while walking - usually on a hot day where I'm sweating a lot. I get a salt fix and it keeps the calf cramps away :) Ileostomates should never skimp on their salt intake.
I usually just rub the area until the pain goes away.
Your doc can do a blood test to see if you're low on potassium.
B12 shots are usually needed by those who have had a significant portion of their small intestine removed (where B12 is absorbed).

Thanks everyone!
Summerstorm- why chewable? i am currently taking ferrous sulfate tabs. do they not get absorbed?? I will look into the sublingual B12 if my lab results show that I am low.
Shaz- my potassium was slightly low, 3.4. I know that any deviation from normal with potassium can be dangerous to the heart so I took in two bananas, lol. also, didn't know b12 was absorbed by the small intestine. good to know...
Crohnielass, I also drank LOTS of fluids when I got home.
Feeling better today, guess I better stay stocked on the fluids, salt and potassium:)

depending on how fast your transit time is and what kind of pill it is it may not have time to get absorbed all the way. Like i take a bcomplex and its a huge horse pill, and i tried smashing it but it tastes too bad, and i sometimes see little pieces of it.
if they are small pills that arent time released then they should be fine.
I just prefer chewables or small pills so i know they get broken down all the way.

Thanks again guys. I felt better that night but the pains came back yesterday and today. I am going to look into this further after Christmas. I've been drinking lots, eating bananas and red meat but it's still there:(
