Welcome Gilda and karen,
It seems there are lots more of us out there than I thought a couple years ago when I started seriously thinking about
surgery. Karen, where do you live? I live in florida and went to Shands regarding surgery, but ended up having it in Orlando last March.
My experience is different than Gilda's. At first (2-3 months) I was going between 10-25 times a day, always just a little at a time. Over time however it's slowed down considerably, and now I take miralax 2 times a day. I still go alot (probably 10 times a day, a little at a time, but without the miralax I was miserable. I also have an outlet problem, and the stool makes it to the rectum, but i have trouble getting it out. I do an enema usually at least once a day, and between that and the miralax it's manageable. I still have days when I have problems, and occasionally something I eat will make me go more, but that's very seldom. Things like alcohol that should give you diarrhea don't bother me at all. Initially everything went through me and I used lomotil, but like I said, that didn't last very long.
Keeping a log is a great idea. I kept one for months, and then when things slowed down, I was able to determine what really messes me up--pizza, hot dogs, alot of any kind of meat make me bloated and constipated. The first time I ate chili I had the sorest butt for 3 days. I made some last week (6 months later) and it didn't bother me at all.
I was lucky that I never really had cramping, except when I ate fried oysters one time. Since then, I've eaten them (but not often) with no problems. My doctor warned me about
cramping, nausea, but I've been lucky about
that. My only issue is still being constipated if I'm not careful.
Jen,
Please don't let yourself get too sick before going to the Dr. I know you hate the thought of the hospital again, but you have to take care of yourself. You poor thing, you've really had a rough time.
Lizzie,
As always I'm thinking about
you and praying tomorrow is the day you'll get some GOOD answers and make a decision about
what you will do. If the doctors feel a normal ileostomy is the way to go, I hope you can accept that and go on with your life. At this point I know you just want to feel good. I pray you'll manage to keep your house, but as someone said, a house is just a house, and your health is everything. I know you have a very supportive family; you will get through this. You also have your family here and you know we're with you every step of the way.
Everyone else, hope you're doing well. It is still so darn cold here in FL and on top of that, I'm getting a stupid cold. Feel pretty lousy this morning, but I'm going to start taking some cold meds right a way. Fingers crossed it won't turn into anything more than a little cold!
Hugs,
Janie
p.s. Jenise, just read your post and THANK you for saying we're about
the same age. Actually I'm 53:). I'll take 48 though!
I have one of Dr. Lahr's books (Why can't I go) and it does talk about
childbirth. I had cystocele surgery a few months before my colectomy, so my bladder was messed up too. Amazing that big boy of mine caused so many problems. Lucky for him he gave me the most beautiful little granddaughter, or I'd be mad at him.
I wonder about
my rectocele. My surgeon keeps saying it's large, but the defecogram always says "small"-I think 1 cm. I'm so afraid to have the STARR procedure; what if it makes things worse? I'd end up with a stoma for sure then. I'm supposed to see my doc in a few weeks, but think I'm going to change it til Feb. because I have a conflict with my appt. day. I'll talk to him more about
it then, and I may even go to CC here in florida before making any more decisions. Glad the miralax is still working for you!!!!
Hugs again to all and Rosemary, have a wonderful time....we'll miss you!!
pps. How do you add a picture?
