This may be a silly question but we all have to deal with this...

Before I aquired my stoma and Ostemy Bag, I used to sprawl out on my stomach to sleep. These days, it's either on my back or on my left side so my bag doesn't get slept on..

Is there a problem sleeping on the bag and the thing leaking at night because the stoma can't drain into it while I sleep ?

Mine popped once cause I rolled over on it when it was very full in the early hours of the morning. I seem to wake up around 2 or 3 and empty now after having it 5 months.

I used to sleep on my stomach, even after 6 babies I went back to stomach sleeping. Not now. Mostly back.

I'd say chances of leaking go way up when you sleep on you pouch side.

i sleep on my stomach,well i go to sleep onmy stomach, but i usually wake up on my back when the bag is full
i sleep on a waterproof pad that i sewed a sheet on, so its soft, and that way i dont worry abotu leaks.

When I had my ileostomy, I would sleep on my front or left side, I didn't think my bag leaked any more or less because of my sleeping position.

When it got a little too full for me to lay on my front, I'd get up and change it or sleep on my back.

I sleep on my stomach and usually turn over during the night. I've never had problems with my stoma not functioning while I am on my stomach or leaks. You could always use a pillow under your torso (like pregnant women do) to help even things out!

'Gotta admit it ( and I have on several threads), sleeping on my stomach is the one thing I can't do since having an ostomy.  But, considering I now play raquet ball, tennis, and a few other active sports on a regular basis...it's an easy trade-off!! Oh well...there are greater tragedies in life than not being able to sleep on your stomach!!!

Hi,

I usually go to sleep on my right-side (pouch side). No issue with leaks, but wonder if this is "safe" to do. Done it for 2+ years so apparently OK.

If I go to sleep on my left side, so that the pouch won't hang at a 90 degree angle, I put a waded-up house coat under the bag so it makes a little shelf for it. Creative, huh?

Then I usually wake up on my back.

i flip and flop all over when I sleep. I sleep on my stomach too.
It's weird how my body will automatically know not to roll over when the bag is full. it's like a bumper that keeps me from rolling on it.
That's when i'll get up and empty it and then go back to sleep on my stomach.

Wade-I had to get used to not sleeping on my stomach, as well .  But, you'll just have to deal with it.  There are bigger travesties in life!!!

BTW....stop calling it a "bag". Jeeze...I hate that @#$%ing word!!! (you can refer to one of my previous threads!)

Not a silly question, but here's a rather silly answer: I had a temporary colostomy 10 years ago and had little trouble sleeping on my stomach. Prior to my cancer/ostomy stage, I had two pregnancies and could sleep partially on my stomach, right up until delivery. Would you like to know how? LOL

My husband and I still have his post-college, first piece of furniture purchase - a waterbed. Yes, it was bought in 1981, we've changed the liner (read, mattress) a few times but we love this bed. I joke we will never, ever get rid of it! It's low to the ground, our Golden can jump right into it and she loves it too. It also has the clever headboard bookshelf, for our alarm clock, tissues, small lamps.

I'm not even sure if you can purchase brand new water beds anymore but we are never getting rid of it. My mom has a fit because here we are - a couple in their 50s - still sleeping in a waterbed. I guess to her she'd want me to have that feminine looking bed, with dust ruffle, 17 pillows, etc. LOL

Maybe it's because I'm a guy who's 6' 4" and weighs 210 pounds, but I can't possibly sleep on my stomach without my ostomy exploding at some point during the night!  When I  play softball I'll slide on my stomach, but sleeping on my stomach....no way!!!  But hey...like I've said before...there are bigger tragedies in life!!!

I don't sleep on my stomach anymore. It took me a while to get used to that cause that's how I slept before getting stoma-ized. I switch from side to side during the night. I'm always aware of where my bag is and its condition. having a bag burst and stewing in pooh while lying in bed is unthinkable. My wife appreciates that too.

Sorry Ron...'didn't mean to appear like the ostomy vernacular police!  You're aces in my book..so call it whatever you want!  Though the "b" word is like nails on a chalkboard to me, you're a "straight up" guy to me, and that's all that matters!  However, if you don't want to use the word "pouch", would you consider "poopy receptacle", lol??  Anything but that GD "b" word, lol!

I'd also like to ask you to be consistent.  6 folks used the word bag in this thread and you only decided to yell at the men. 

Personally I think you are being too sensitive but to each there own.

I was about to post - boys, boys, behave, otherwise you're going to have to stand against the wall (image of my daughters' playground experiences, if you misbehaved, you had to stand against the school wall for recess, when they'd come home from school and say "I had to stand against the wall", I knew, oh no, what did you do? LOL)

Glad you two made up and all is good here now. I do like the family atmosphere here.

Now that everything got off track ... I used to LOVE sleeping on my stomach. I sleep on my back now until about 5 which I ALWAYS have to wake up to empty the bag (oh, scratch that ... pouch. Hmmm. sounds kinda kangaroo-ish ... heck, I'll call it a purse :-)! anyway, I still have a couple hours to sleep and that's when I indulge in serious tummy to the mattress action. I am in HEAVEN and sleep empty, comfy, and happy.

BTW...I haven't had a good garlic pickle since I moved from New York to Georgia 4 years ago( or a good slice of pizza, for that matter!)!!!!
