I am four months post op proctocolectomy with ileostomy for crohns disease.  I have been having rectal drainage that has been samll amounts yellowish, now this week it is green and yesterday started to be bloody.  It is small amounts but I have a lot of rectal discomfort. I am on antibiotics for a UTI that started about one week ago.  I am not sure if this is normal drainage or if I should be concerned and contacting my surgeons office??? Anyone have experience with this. Thanks in advance

Jen~hang in there...I've been there, too!

Was your bottom sewn shut? Are you packing the wound? Did it heal completely, then start draining?

I experienced an abscess about 6 months out, after my proctocolectomy, and had to have outpatient surgery to have it cleaned out. It wasn't a big deal, and I packed the wound for a few months until it completely healed. I haven't had a problem since:)

I would definitely suggest you call your surgeon's office in the morning!

Yes I was sewn shut, no packing of the wound. I had rectal drainage post op immediately that was very minor amounts this seems to be more and now with the blood I am concerned.  I did call about the drainage previously about a month ago and the nurse told me that if there was not an odor to the drainage not to worry but I can tell something is not right.  I will call again. Thanks so much for your reply. I am feeling helpless and alone out here with this new ostomy.

Hi Jen I had the same surgery for Crohns disease as well and was sewn shut too, I did have discharge for a while after surgery with some blood at times too. I too was concerned about the amount and color of the discharge and went to see my doc for reassurance to find it was normal and all part of the healing process. If in doubt don't be afraid to give your doc a quick call for piece of mind. Take care

If the pain has increased, and the drainage has increased with blood, I would be calling the doctor. I had a peri-anal abscess before my ileostomy, and now have been sewn shutt too... so i'm imagining them combined. I would go ahead and make an appointment.

If the blood/discharge changed without any difference in pain, I wouldn't worry so much.

I hope it's an easy fix, whatever the case!
