one step surgery

I am going to have my colon removed due to UC and  my surgeon said that he might be able to do the surgery all in one step instead of two and I was wondering if anyone else has had the one-step done and if they had major problems with it. I just haven't been able to find people that have had the one step, so any feedback would be great! Thanks

You're very lucky. One step surgery is usually only done if you're relatively healthy to begin with and on no meds. Most people tend to have two step surgery, or even three (if they're very sick going into surgery).

Good luck with your surgery. You'll feel so well once the surgery healing is over.

I had asked my surgeon about that and he said he never would perform that even though I was in relatively good health. The reason why was because the pouch needed to heal before anyting would be stored in it. I actually had a minor leak and had to wait a little longer. You are talking about a jpouch, correct?

There are many 1-steppers. You can meet them at www.j-pouch.org The reason why most have the surgery in 2-3 steps is due to prednisone history. Most of us went into surgery on prednisone, or with a recent history of pred-use, and that is not recommended for a 1-step.

At Mount Sinai in Toronto they do a one step fairly often, IF you are in good health and not on medications. If you are sick and on drugs they do two steps. The first to remove the diseased colon and get you off the meds. The second they build the pouch and usually connect it. It is protected for about a week with an anal tube while it heals. If there is ANY thing that the surgeon thinks did not go 100% by the books during this surgery you are given another ileostomy for 10-16 weeks while the pouch heals and the inflammation from surgery before goes down before they will close off the ileostomy site....this would be the third surgery.
