sub-total colectomy and ileorectal anastomosis

Hi

I have been told to go away and think about having a

sub-total colectomy and ileorectal anastomosis. I have told my Specialist that there is no way I want a Stoma Bag. Apparently taking the large bowel out he can re-connect the upper bowel back to your bottom. Ie, no stoma bag. I have suffered with my bowels for years. I also have RSD , and had 4 mini strokes last July. My Specialist states: In reality, he is not the greatest candidate for surgical intervention

Could someone please explain more about the operation. How long to recovery. And do they empty your bowels first. I am 61 years of age.

Why the hate of a stoma pouch?
I had 3 strokes related to Crohn's surgeries. I had to re-learn how to walk, talk and drive again. I was 25. If someone had told me everything could have been avoided if I had simply gotten a colostomy I would have said "sign me up."

Hello Midnat,  I have had subtotal colectomy with ileorectal anastomosis on june 10, 2010 so I am now 7 weeks out and I am doing very well. I was in the hospital for 7 days because I had to wait for my bowels to wake up and when they did I realized that the surgery was the best thing I did. I have had severe constipation for over 10 years and nothing worked for me until now.  I now have up to 5-6 bowl movements a day with out any laxitives thank god. The surgery is a big surgery and the recovery can be long I was tired for the first 2 weeks then I got more energy, I didn't even have to take pain meds since day 4 in the hospital. I went back to work after 3 weeks granted I can not lift any thing heavy but I am a dermatology nurse so I am just doing charting now. If you have any question please feel free to let me know .

Hi, Please note that, after more than 30 years, there's a new device on the market for reconnecting the intestine in sub-total colectomy. It's called ColonRing. This device does not use staples to create the anastomosis, but rather press the two bowel ends together to enable the natural wound healing of the body to join them. I had a Sub Total Colectomy in 2006 and now I am back to the constipation again!!!!!!! I have tried everything, amatiza, miralax, fiber in foods, low fat diet, water drinking, milk of mag., stool softners etc. I am hurting with a LOT of gas and bloating each. If I don't eat, I feel great but when I eat I get so miserable. Is there anything that anyone can suggest? I am so worn out and getting depressed. Thanks

Susie, how much of the colon did your doctor leave behind? Because with colonic inertia, they have found that removing ALL of the colon is the only way to prevent continued constipation post-surgery.

Do you have issues with hard, infrequent stools or problems getting the stool out of your body, or both?

Because I have colonic inertia and an outlet obstructive defecation syndrome, which is a pelvic floor dysfunction.

Last year, I had surgery and the doctor did a subtotal colectomy, rectal surgery to repair a rectocele and intussecption, and a fecal diversion, which is a temporary loop ileostomy, basically I have a "bag.

After the 1st week, it was very obvious that I was going to LOVE having the bag. I feel better than I have felt in YEARS.

Have you been back to see your surgeon to see what he says?

Hi,

I didnt have the same problems as you i never went to the toilet on my own from 2 weeks old so suffered badly all my life till i was 46, i was too scared to go to the doctors because i thought i would have to have a stomabag, i saw a mr richard cohen at the uclh and after a year of tests i had a sub total colectomy & ileorectal annastomosis in sept 2008, it took about 6 months to start feeling normal agin but about a year to completely recover, i was in theatre i think for about 7 hours but it as changed my life completely i am a new person and now wish i had it done years ago, i dont have a bag at all its fantastic , i go to toilet like normal people now the first time in 46 years i would really recommend going ahead but go to mr cohen if you can, i think if you go to your gp you can choose to see him, good luck
