adhesions

I am pretty sure I have them. I have pain around the incision on the left side of my abdomen, sometimes a LOT. It is usually after eating. They have tested me a ton to see what it could be, and everything comes back normal. There are no tests to see if you have adhesions. I had a small bowel follow-through (barium), andf thsat took a long time, which usually means adhesions. :(

I had a CT enterography (different than normal cat scan). They looked for narrowings in the small intestine and none showed. They can't actually visualize adhesions but it's the narrowing of small bowel, if present, that may indicate adhesions on the outside of the bowel.

I had that test because I had 2 food clogs on mashed potato which luckily I passed on my own. No narrowing showed anywhere and they had me drink about a half gallon of water 30 mins prior to the test so my small intestines were as distended as they could be.

They had me drink water because any contrast with any body to it such as heavy syrup would have gone right into the bag and wouldn't distend my small intestine. (I have fast transit time.)

So this doesn't mean I'll never have an issue, but the news I got from this test was good. Rosemary

yeah Chassity, i'm having this pain this morning UGH, i also had it on Saturday. this pain doubles me over. i hate taking pain killers so often, i just wish i knew if it's from adhesions or is it just food causing it. oh well, i guess either way, we just have to live with it and hope it doesn't get worse. it's like i can go 2 weeks with no pain at all, then i can have pain attacks every other day and i always eat the same foods.. go figure.

Rosemary, that's the exact ct scan my surgeon wanted to do to me when i had my blockages in the first 2 weeks post the ileo surgery, but then the 10 days between my release form the hosp to the follow up i was pain free, so he cancelled it. only if (i hope it doesn't) it'll happen too often, then he'll feel there's a need to do it, but so far it's managable thank goodness.

Have the CT enterography anyway. Just have them have you drink water for contrast. It really distends the small bowel without going out of you into the bag. Do it while you are not having an issue and they can see if your small intestine is all open and good. Rosemary

How do you know if you have adhesions?

Oh, the pain. Then the vomiting.

Just had surgery to lyse adhesions. Had a lot, well I did have 6 ab surgeries and they were all lapro so go figure. They actually found 2 small blockages on a small bowel series. Time will tell-there are no guarantees.
